Versailles Palace said to be "unique out of all the palaces in Europe". With 2300 rooms, there were no toilets until 1768. By the French Revolution in 1789 there were only 9, belonging to the King & his closest family members. The palace just had to live with the constant smells clinging to their clothes, apartments and general atmosphere from privy-chambers, underneath any of 67 staircases, or hidden behind things; although banned, chamber pots were constantly emptied out the nearest window.
