The Mountain Meadows Massacre, which occurred on September 11, 1857, was a brutal slaughter of around 120 emigrants from Arkansas traveling by wagon train through Utah Territory, perpetrated by local Mormon militiamen and some Native American allies at a valley called Mountain Meadows, located roughly 35 miles southwest of Cedar City, Utah; the massacre is considered one of the most tragic events in Mormon history, as it saw the killing of men, women, and children, with only 17 very young children being spared.
The attackers were primarily members of the Utah Territorial Militia, composed largely of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), who were aided by some Southern Paiute Native Americans.
Tensions were high due to the "Utah War," a conflict between the Mormon settlers and the U.S. government, which led to rumors and suspicion towards the emigrants.
The emigrants were lured out of their camp under the pretense of safety, then were surrounded and massacred.
The massacre was largely covered up, with blame initially placed on the Native Americans, and the perpetrators were never fully brought to justice.
