I’m glad you enjoyed the combo of stories. There was a podcast that interviewed LaValle about the writing of The Balled of Black Tom . I wish I could remember which one.

Is it me, or are modern audiences and authors more interested in,perhaps even obsessed with, character over story, than authors in the past? Movies and TV shows too.

That’s an interesting observation and you might be right. It definitely feels like TV has moved on a long way in terms of having complex characters. The cynic in me wonders if it’s because you can always squeeze more book/films/seasons out of characters but you can’t with plots.

@@CriminOllyBlog yeah, that is the biggest complaint/critique I hear of most often about books, movies, and TV; lack of character development, or growth, or backstory, or lack of interesting characters. I don't know if I heard about it too much in critiques in the past.

For cosmic horror week, I read the Isaac Asimov story “Green Patches”, which was more creepy than horrific.

I’ve not heard of that one, although given how much Asimov wrote that’s probably not surprising!

I really enjoyed The Ballad of Black Tom! I also read a novella that riffed on an H. P. Lovecraft story for Cosmic Horror week! Mine was The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe, by Kij Johnson, a female version of The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. I’ve yet to read Lovecraft’s story, but hopefully I’ll get to it soon!

@@CriminOllyBlog I liked the descriptions of what Vellitt saw on her journey, but wasn’t satisfied with her decision at the end. It did seem to fit with the personality she had before she was a professor, so I can’t really complain.

Red Hook does better because atleast the story focuses more on the cosmic horror than the identity political book that tries a replicate in the worst ways

TBH I thought the politics in Red Hook was much more heavy handed
@giotio1237

@@CriminOllyBlog what politics? it just describes the screaming and tells horror story about Suydam's wedding of how the couple have been found dead. Also the storyline only describes some characters appearances and environment that surrounds them which is in every storyline. Balled of black tom is just a copy and paste version of lovecrafts tale while insulting the author. Writers like Victor LaValle, Nnedi Okorafor and Matt Ruff are only in it for the money while insulting the author and calling him racist for his personal views.

A later book building on the themes of an older book and making it better. I said the same in my latest video comparing 'Fatherland' to '1984'. Anyway, haven't read anything from Lovecraft but from what I hear and read online, Ghostbusters was very much influenced by Lovecraft.

I’d never though about the similarity between those two books, but now you mention it I can see it.
