Saw X is also my favorite horror of 2023. The the acting from the cast were amazing, love the cinematography of the film, the practical effects on the gore was really good. Such a solid film.

'Low budget is not an excuse to half ass things' is SUCH a based take omg, thank you Sarah haha. Films like Alien, Halloween, The Thing, had MINUSCULE budgets compared to modern horror movies, and look what they managed to do! And the passion also really shows, you can tell when a team doesnt give a shit about their story or the movie and are just in it for the money and that takes the enjoyment away from me a bit

Skinamarink was definitely a creepy, very interesting and unique film. I loved the idea and it definitely disturbed me. I personally didn't enjoy watching it because I just felt so bad for the kids (I know this doesn't mean its a bad film at all). It also brought back bad memories for me where I would wake up after a nightmare and couldn't find my parents in the house anywhere. Good movie just very hard for me to watch.

Consecration and Unwelcome are the only two I haven't seen in your list, but I've not heard good reviews. The Carmichael Manor was so scary! It's also one of my favorites of the year. Some scenes in Talk to Me were so disturbing. Scream 6, Missing (I know it's technically a thriller but it scared me more than a lot of horror films so I count it as horror), When Evil Lurks, Huesera, and Attachement are some other favorites from this year!

I've watched your channel for a while but I think it's the first time I'm commenting. I love your videos so much! And I love that we have entirely different tastes (I'm not a fan of Saw or Insidious or creature features) but the passion I hear in your voice when you dissect your horror favorites sounds like how I talk about the horror I like. I quit cocaine last year and the sobriety journey gets very lonely sometimes, as I'm still creating and cultivating new sober friendships and mourning the loss of friends I can't hang out with anymore for my own health and safety. I found your channel at a perfect time and I'm really grateful I get to listen to someone who loves different horror than what I love and understand a different point of view. Merry Christmas and happy new year everyone

I haven't seen Blood and Honey, but the idea on paper seems solid to me. If they took that premise and tried to make a dead serious horror film that was legitimately effective as a horror film, that's kind of the subversive and fun thing about it. Exploitation films are cash grabs, they "exploit" the success of other films (or books or whatever), so turning Winnie the Pooh into a masked slasher is pretty clever, I think, if you see it as a spin on the exploitation film generally. Actual exploitation films from the grindhouse era did this all the time. They didn't just reference popular films they were ripping off, but well known myths, historical episodes, and stories. An example would be the Lady Godiva or Caligula films, for instance. The whole point was to hijack existing ideas -- or what we today call "intellectual property" -- that was in the public domain but would be recognizable to audiences, like a brand name for a well known franchise, and then add gore and sleaze. Would it have been a better movie if it had been a campy horror comedy with ironic or meta references to the source material? Because to me that sounds awful, but it seems like people are complaining that they didn't go this route. Why would anybody want them to go that route? But like I said, I haven't seen it. I suppose they could have gone for a legit horror film and just failed in the horror department, which is what it sounds like from the reviews. I suppose all the clever ideas are for nothing if the film fails as a horror film.

Not really a "Horror Fan" so haven't watched the more niche movies on this list. I've also skipped Scream VI because I'm done with that franchise after the atrocious Scream 5. And I had no interest in Exorcist: Believer, Saw X {seriously can this franchise end please!} or Insidious: The Red Door. With that said my Top 5 "Horror" movies of 2023 would be... 1. The Pope's Exorcist - The only one I actually truly liked. 2. A Haunting in Venice - A 6/10 for me, would not baulk at giving it a second watch. 3. Totally Killer - 6/10 again but more divided on my feelings about it than AHiV. 4. M3gan - 6/10 again, definite problems with this one but it was an enjoyable watch. 5. Evil Dead Rise - Again rated it a 6/10 but definitely would not choose to rewatch it - Nothing will ever top the Original. - The Nun II and Meg 2 are both 5/10s for me - I was disappointed in both sequels after enjoying the Nun and The Meg. -

I understand why so many people loved Saw X but it was my second big dissappointment of the year after Scream VI. See John Kramer as a protagonist just didn't work for me with all my respect to Tobin Bell's performance.

I didn't love Cobweb. It had me a lot of the way through but lost me in the finale. For me they showed too much of the villain and they looked a bit goofy CG for me too enjoy. I'm over the mutated gangly woman as a horror trope. Plus I was so annoyed that the really creepy shot used in the trailers of Lizzy Caplan standing in the dark turned out to be a pretty irrelevant dream sequence. That shot is what got me interested and I felt cheated. My top of the year are Saw X, Hell House 4, Thanksgiving, and Scream 6. Scream 6 is my second least favourite Scream film for a lot of the issues you stated, but there is still no bad Scream film for me.
@GlynDwr-d4h

Cobweb was clever because it kept misdirecting you and you couldn't be sure which kind of horror film it was. I would have preferred it if the reveal was that the kid was psychotic and imagining somebody in his walls instead, but they went with the "person in the walls" Bad Ronald trope instead, unfortunately.

I agree about the gangly woman being over used. Its like the gollam looking villain of the early 00s. Also agree, there's no bad Scream film. But I've just not taken to 5 and 6.

Red Door on the 9th?? 🤔 It's one of the worst movies in every aspect... ever. 😁 The story, acting, characters... ugh, one bad movie. And the worst in Insidious franchise too. Tastes differ, I agree, but I'm always slightly confused when someone with more knowledge about the topic finds the worth in a movie that I consider an almost unwatchable generic milking-of-the-tired-franchise piece of time waste. 🙂

There is thinking a film is technically good and there is liking a film for personal reasons. I have an emotional attachment to the Insidious films and so I found enjoyment in Red Door. What is great about horror is that we won't all like the same thing and there are films for everyone.
