🎃 Howdy y’all, thanks for stopping by! 🎃 Hope you enjoyed this one! It’s been a while since I just made a normal speedpaint like this, so I felt so rusty doing the edit, haha. (Had a lot of fun featuring my funky new spooky sprite in this one though, haha) A lot of us are spending Halloween indoors this year, so hopefully there are some good recommendations in here for seasonally-appropriate musicals y’all can enjoy! (^^)/ (And as usual, links for prints of these pieces are in the description - Happy Halloween! 👻)

Yess! I'm not a musical person so I didn't know if the red hair was normal in productions of Dracula and when I saw the thumbnail I was really hoping it was the Korean version which it was! Yes it is a k-pop idol. His name is Xia Junsu and he used to be in the group TVXQ until about half the group broke off into their own group called JYJ under a different record label. TVXQ are a such a classic group in k-pop. Junsu himself does do solo work as well which definitely gets very dramatic and powerful. See his music video for his song Flower as an amazing example.

One of my favorite lines in Heathers is when she says “say hi to god” in I Am Damaged because I find it so cool that she still hopes he gets to heaven, and really I personally believe it just goes to show how different she is from JD because she doesn’t prosecute people for their bad parts as JD does with the popular kids, but she sees the good parts in people and works to make the world better

I recently listened to I Say No and although the beat doesn’t hit as hard as some other Heathers songs do, the meaning and message absolutely do. As someone who has been in a lot of emotionally abusive and manipulative relationships (I left my most recent one barely a month ago), I relate to it a little too personally and scary accurately portrays my emotional state while I was cutting off my last ex, aka being angry and fed up with being manipulated and hurt while also initially feeling hurt and guilty for it. Thank you so much for recommending it in this video!!

As far as I know, Black Friday doesn't have one single piece of media that it is based on, but the writers drew heavy inspiration from the works of HP Lovecraft as well as Steven King. These influences carry over into the broader Hatchedfield Universe, that as of now encompasses Black Friday, TGWDLM, their Livestream anthology series Nightmare Time and an upcoming musical named Nerdy Prudes Must Die.

I went searching for the Dracula you were talking about and the person that played Dracula is named Kim JunSu. He debuted as an old and popular k-pop group called TVXQ, but he's no longer in the group. He's been doing musicals since 2010 and I believe that's what he mostly does now. Haven't really released his own albums or anything in recent years. So, honestly, although he debuted as a k-pop idol, he's more of a musical actor now.

I really like the original Heathers musical before broadway- partly because I love Barrett, and partly because it's my childhood. I do love the movie most, though, because Veronica catches on to the manipulation sooner, it just takes her a while to get out of it, which is more accurate to me. I should probably listen to the Broadway one the whole way through, but kinda like Be More Chill, the Broadway version changes kinda shocked me and made me stay away.

I discovered Dracula from small promotional clips from Korean KZitem channels here. I think you're talking about Junsu (if the Dracula you saw had red hair). The the revolving walls as people chased each other in the Korean production for "It's Over" was good. "Elisabeth" while not as horror as Dracula seemed dark with a character like Death himself as a seeming love interest and the songs sounded both regal, gothic and creepy at the same time.

I'd love to see your interpretation of Past the Point of No Return or Wandering Child from The Phantom of the Opera, The Riddle or Creation of Man from The Scarlet Pimpernel, and/or Consider Yourself or I'd Do Anything from Oliver!, though I'd say only The Phantom of the Opera would count as a Halloween musical, since it covers dark topics (abuse, neglect, human cruelty, obsession) and takes place almost entirely in the Palais Garnier, a French theatre/opera house. I will say that I prefer the stage version of this play since it explores the Phantom's vulnerability and magician-like abilities as opposed to the 2004 film. The Scarlet Pimpernel takes place during on of the French Revolutions where a British aristocrat decides enough is enough and ventures to France to rescue innocents from the guillotine -- by the way, Madame Guillotine is a masterpiece in my opinion. Plus, you would get a chance to really delve into costumes and lighting, since Percy (the Pimpernel) is the biggest fop you ever will see; at least, that is how he presents himself in order to keep his identity as the scarlet vigilante a secret, and I love the dynamic between Percy and Chauvelin (the antagonist, a French officer charged with hunting down and executing the Pimpernel).

Me looking at the thumbnail: Am I finally going to get Korean production of Dracula content? I was very satisfied by this video. Also, I'm sure you've heard it, but if you've never listened to the 1994 Complete Works for Jekyll & Hyde, I would so highly recommend it. There are a few songs in there that didn't make it to the Broadway version but they go so hard. Jekyll/Hyde are sung by Anthony Warlow who is just unmatched. I've probably listened to that album 100 times, no exaggeration. Also, if you've never checked out the even earlier Colm Wilkinson recordings of the songs, I'd totally recommend those too. I'm only a /little/ obsessed with Frank Wildhorn musicals.
