Bits in the correct hands are not torture devices, i don't see why everyone is so up in arms about them. Yes, some bits are nasty and severe, but generally any nice snaffle bit used correctly is perfectly painless for the horse. Even a halter can be painful if the horseman is harsh, it's not the tool it's how you use it. Good video, very educational about types of bits that are gentle, keep your horse soft, and are not harsh.

My opinion on bits is that you can use them, as long as you don't use them for control. You should start any horse bitless. That way it will learn to be soft and responsive. If your horse act up or runs off, you go all the wat back to the beginning of your training and fix what needs to be fixed. That also means you go back to bitless and teach them to move off soft pressure on their head. You dont shove a bigger bit in there. As a rider you also need to make sure you have really soft hands. If you fall off you let go. If you get frustrated at your horse you don't ''punish'' it by yanking on it. And you need to make sure that in a situation where you get scared, you don't rely on the reins for balance. (This takes practise, don't be too hard on yourself.) Bits don't control your horse. Your horse controls itself. And you need to help them learn to trust, rely on and have confidence in themselve. Those huge shank bits you see in reining for example should only be used by professional people and horses in my opinion. Those who have all the basics down perfectly. Where the rider only needs to lift a finger and the horse responds. For sports where constant contact is required you should stick to very soft bits. I would even go for a rubber one. Your horse can be just as soft without suffereing the concequences of having a ton of pressure in it's mouth for an extended period of time. Collection can also be aquired with light pressure or no pressure at all, keep that in mind .

@cyberg00se No need to be judgmental. Any means of controling a horse can be harsh and detrimental to the horse, whereas someone with truly soft, quiet, following hands could ride with just about anything for a bit and still not injure his or her horse's mouth. Plus, in most competition, you are required to use a bit or hackamore. Hackamores can actually by much more severe than a correctly used snaffle bit. Just because someone uses a bit doesn't mean that they abuse their horse.

People who make broad generalizations about others that they have never met havent done their research....This man says like twenty times how you need to be gentle to your horse. How is that cruel at all. Some bits are harsh and awful, but all the ones he talks about in this video are nice and gentle. Yes, anyone yanking and tearing with their hands will hurt the horse. Even a halter or bitless bridle can be harmful in the wrong hands.
