The title “Make Your Horse Respect You” with the word “make” in it is problematic. When was the last time you gave your respect to another human being because that person “made” you? Respect is earned.

I really enjoy your teaching! Your style is gentle and positive. You do an amazing job of breaking down the skills. BUT....all of the skills I'm really wanting to learn (basic groundwork and respect) are bei.g demonstrated with Tucker, a seriously well trained and respectable horse. It would be immensely helpful to see you work with a beginner horse. Watching the skills in real life action would be awesome. Tucker teaches me what the end goal looks like, not the process.

Hi, I have a new and fairly green 10 year old mare. I have tried some of these exercises with her and with time they do work like a breeze. With younger horses it may take a bit longer, especially if you bought them from the Amish, haha.
@lesliejohnson6175

Exactly. The point is, she’s teaching you WHAT to do. So keep doing it UNTIL your horse “mirrors” what Tucker is doing. It wouldn’t matter if she provides videos with a green af horse… The point is to teach you what to do and to KEEP doing it UNTIL your horse mirrors what Tucker is doing. Training is repetitive and requires a LOT of patience. And I bet ANYTHING Tucker was NOT trained like this when she got him. I would bet money. SHE trained him. Guaranteed. How? By doing exactly what she’s showing us. Take it or leave it, but if you choose to implement her tips, you just HAVE to be patient, do it CORRECTLY, be more patient, and CONSISTENT. Don’t expect results if you’re also not spending any time with your horse bonding… (Grooming, walks, just being with them in their stall)… Grab and book and sit with them. They need to know they can trust you before you embark on a training program. This is done by spending time with them. Once you’ve established rapport with them, THEN move in desensitization exercises and training. BUT, again, don’t expect results there either if you’re only out there training once a week; once in a blue moon… This requires a LOOOT of consistency. It’s key. ESP with a super green horse, baby, etc. Just like going to the gym… Don’t expect to get fit and lean or whatever your goals are if you’re only going once every two/three weeks… Ain’t gonna happen.

However, I have lost a lot of confidence and I find that he is now pushing me around and has become the boss. This video has been very helpful and I am excited to get out and try these techniques with my boy. I really want to build a great relationship with my boy and am very excited about the future....if I can get past my fears!

Young Lady I am impressed. I have been a horse trainer for many decades. I have not seen many that can teach as well as you without having an attitude. It's great you make it okay that people are a work in progress just like their horse. I would like to offer one thing that I bet just slipped your mind because you were showing what the proper response looks like. I found that there are verbal cues if you talk to your horse as your working them many times the sound of your voice can be calming if you use them in your foundation work and ground work. When you disengage the hind end lunging you are stopping your horse so saying " whoa" every time but say it then ask with pressure They will quickly learn to stop facing you on the word . You don't have to be loud . When starting young horses the ground work is the time to teach these verbal command . They will be handy the first time you get on.

Thank you so much for this! I've had my horse for 12 years, and she went from a spitfire at first to an absolute angel. However, I just moved her to a new stable, so all those old behaviors flared up again. I had gotten so used to her being pretty much perfect that I'd needed a refresher on how to handle her when she's testing boundaries. This was perfect!

I haven't done a lot of riding, and I know I'm not an expert. I *have* done lots of research though, and I think my dream breed is a Fresian. They're supposed to be gentle natured, and they're big enough that I wouldn't feel bad sitting on them, which is exactly what I would want in a horse that mainly would just be for trail rides and for fun. The gorgeous looks are definitely a plus too though.

You are so helpful. I’ve been working with my 20yr mare I’ve had for about 11 yrs and she is an Appaloosa (my most favorite breed). I love her so much. We always do a little ground work so she knows we are in it together. Very quiet very calm just move or remind her what she knows already. I bred her one more time and retired her from breeding. She was a challenge for the breeders so they gave her to me for free. She needed so much ground work so over the years I’ve used yours and others helpful information. It’s been so much fun with her. I’ve allowed her to be who she is. We water the garden we fetch water, go for long walks and lay around wherever we feel like. I recommend your site to all of my ranch friends who have said how helpful you are and I’ve seen them in the round pen a time or two! Thank you, thank you so much for your help and your tips! ❤

I have two Konik yearlings. They were wild up to about a month ago. One male, one female. And, just to add to the fun, I've never owned horses before although I have worked with and trained dogs, goats, sheep and a bull. Last week the dynamic duo managed to get out and it took me the week to get them back and, in that time they partially rewarded LOL. Nico, he's good, since I've started brushing him down he has bonded well however, Neila, the mare, she's a different kettle of fish. Yes, she comes up of her own accord and, will come when called but, as for brushing or rubbing her, it's all dependent on her mood that day. In addition, she does get jealous of Nico being brushed and will allow a little herself if she sees Nico getting worked over. Somewhat concerned that I need to get her to stop walking off and accept the brush or, my hands. Then of course comes the challenge of the rope and halter... I've been letting them dictate the pace so far but think it's time to take control.. should be fun.
