I think it should be the case you have to book before showing up, that might prevent idiots from getting in the way so much.

Horse guards should be closed permanently to the public for the abuse the horses and guards have to endure they should be inside and the public should be outside

Strange they will close because of the rehearsal but not when the rain is bad.

It’s Britain. We only have 2 types of rain: the drizzle that gets you soaked, or heavy downpours that get you soaked.

They are soldiers. Rain is no big deal. Go to the Tomb of the Unknown soldier in DC. Those Guards are out in all weather as well. Including hurricanes.

Beating retreat from whoever.

Beating the retreat originated hundreds of years ago, back to the reign of King James II. The beating of the drums and parade of the post guards signified that the camp gates were closed for the day and the flags being lowered at day's end. Nothing to do with retreating from someone

@marjorie8352 I was lucky because as a teen I worked at summer camps and we always had Taps (in the US) and the gate was closed. The director told us about beating the retreat and it stuck with me. I did have to Google the part about King James though. I didn't remember that part!
