I think the best thing about this video is that the horse is interacting with the man as if he were another horse, and the two of them are playing. This is brilliant in every way.

My response to this is that horses really love having some "domination"; they are natural followers, and love leadership. What's great about this is that he isn't actually dominating the horse, he's simply providing a leadership that the horse can choose to respect or not, and the horse is giving him an enthusiastic yes. As myprophet said, the stick is merely an extension of the arm to provide some physical direction while still maintaining a personal boundary of a few feet. It's really artful!

I love watching this video because it reminds me of my herd's alpha percheron playing with our wanna-be dominant pony. This is what horses do with each other (and with cows in cutting). It is not necessarily a trick and the horse is lightning fast because horses are highly perceptive (reflexes are part of the evolution of the horse, who has to keep an eye on potential danger and the commands of the leader of the herd.). I guess that there is not much else to say.

I don't run my horse until she feels she has no options and wants to join up... my horse joins up with me because she is a herd animal and wants to be in a herd, AND she trusts and respects me. She frequently joins up in the field without me asking her to do a thing and follows me freely, away from her pasture - mates. If this horse didn't want to be here he would merely stop participating. His partner is aware of his feelings - petting when he is anxious - looking for lick & chew.

and... you know what?? The stick is used as an extension of the arm, for the horses benefit, and the "smacking" as you call it is simply taps to help the horse keep "tempii". The fact is, if the horse had a "problem" with his human's behavior he would simply leave.

i think that most horses would join the trainer of their own free will if they were given time, but the ting about join-up is that the choise is to run(keep moving away) or submit/join-up really fast - if you don't do that, that's great, but then I wouldn't call it join-up either.

more motivating then more work. He needs a bond like these two have. I am currently looking for a bit less bridle to switch him to, but I feel that's just a start. Please tell me there is a way for me to learn this technique without spending loads of money!

@FredTheCloud ... the horse' natural pride and "noble" being. You can see how this horse allow itself to leave and voluntary come back WITHOUT submitting (something which isn't allowed in "proper" join-up as you call it) The horse can of course "recover" from join-up and be playful, but the concept of join-up is to keep the horse submited and the be a "leader" (or just a "bully" the horse has to obey )

@Marixxen2 Proper join up does not run run run run run the horse until they submit, nor is it a one way street when it comes to respect. When a horse really doesn't want to come in, there is a point long before running them hard when it's time to just move on to something else and come back to the round pen later. Respect in join up is a two way street, the horse respects the person's space, and the person respects the horse's space as well. It's only when the horse moves into the person's space
@FredTheCloud
13 жыл бұрын
@Marixxen2 obviously you have never seen join up used properly if your reason for thinking it has not been used with this horse because the horse is "happy and playful." Join up is a lot about choice when used properly. The horse has to choose to accept the person as the herd leader, and choose to want to come in and be near that person and to follow them freely. I personally use join up and I can assure you my horse is quite happy and playful

@Marixxen2 ...and you don't end up with a suppressed horse. You end up with an equal partner that willingly recognizes that you are the leader. Not their master they must submit to for fear of being run ragged. You end up being their leader, but their friend as well. Some one they can play with but also someone they want to please. I rarely need anything more than just myself when doing ground work with my horse. My horse half the time treats work in the round pen as play time.

@FredTheCloud yes, join-up is about choice, but when the options are as few as they are in a roundpen, there're little to choose between. I have used join-up myself, and know how it's done and the concept of it. The horse has only a few opitions. Run og submit. Respekt is earned through trust, not pressure. And respekt is not subordination and obedience. It has to be mutual. And forcing someone to rund, is not mutual respekt. Beacuse join-up is about submition, it will suppress the horse' ....

@Marixxen2 ...will ever work to anything besides the person's disadvantage. The first farrier I used when I got him tried bullying him into behaving. My horse got worse every time he came out. The third and final time I used that farrier my horse threw out the guy's back. Every time my horse manages to push my buttons, I just have to tie him somewhere and just walk away, because once I start getting into a mindset to force him to do what I want, it's just game over. You use join up correctly...

ottopasquier - ALL training is "total domination". Training for martial arts; to play a musical instrument; to be a dancer; to drive a car... Dominant ≠ cruel. Would you say it's wrong for the horse to earn his room, board and medical insurance by "working for a living" as all creatures must? You have some sort of "button" on the smacking of the whip upon the ground to signal for a faster tempo, more energy, etc.? Perhaps that comes from someone having cruelly managed you at some time?

@4Champ2and0 I'd say learn the fundamentals of Parelli then rely on your experience from there. Rent the videos form a library or something. Above all, make sure your horse trusts and understands you. Get him comfortable with being touched by the whip all over. Dont ge afraid to spend months teaching the basics to him. Good luck!

While this training method may have worked with her horse I dont think all horses can be lumped into ONE training method. I think my guy needs something...
