my daughter rescued a lovely mare, who was quite saucy, heartbroken over the death of her previous owner. my daughter became pregnant, the mare changed dramatically-she knew and she mellowed almost instantly. these days, my grandson could sit between her feet if he wanted to - while the mare will not even twitch an ear, being so careful. love brought her back!

Several years ago, I went to visit my daughter in Michigan for the weekend. At the end of my stay, I noticed their black lab had begun to get more protective of my daughter. They'd told me they were trying for a child already. When I started chuckling, they asked why. I said, "You're pregnant. Congratulations." Then I had to explain why their dog was acting so strange. Two weeks after I got home, she called me and said, "You were right. I thought our dog was just being picky, but you nailed it." I think it’s bc they can hear the extra heart beat…dogs can hear our heartbeats. A dog can hear their owner coming home, every vehicle has a specific sound; they can hear our heart beats and match their’s with our’s. Most animals can smell our brain chemicals/pheromones and can identify what our action will be before we actually act. There’s an excellent documentary, “The Hidden Lives of Pet”, that highlights different pets, including fish, cats, parrots/macaws, dogs, etc. that have formed very close bonds with their humans. It’s quite amazing and as the film explains, our senses by comparison are much weaker/less developed bc animals use their senses to survive. So, to us, animals’ normal senses seem to be superpowers. We can learn a lot from animals if we take the time to watch and listen. My $.02.
