09.14.2019 | 5:52 PM | JUNIPER FLATS - A vegetation fire dubbed the "Horseshoe Fire" scorched nearly 500 acres and was only 20% contained as hundreds remained evacuated from their homes, Saturday.
Authorities responded to reports of a vegetation fire burning in the 21000 block of Horseshoe Trail around 5:52 PM.
Crews arriving on scene located an approximately 10 acre fire burning in heavy fuel with a moderate rate of spread.
Firefighters battled the flames but flames continued to burn to 490 acres with only 20% containment by the following afternoon.
Approximately 60 homes occupied by over 200 residents in the Mayberry community in San Jacinto were under mandatory evacuations.
Two air tankers, one helicopter, and over 200 firefighters were on scene battling the blaze and working to protect homes.
There was no report of any injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
