As the first Black faculty member hired at Carolina in 1966, Hortense
McClinton distinguished herself as a pioneer in desegregating the
social work profession. During her nearly 20 years of service at UNC
School of Social Work, Mrs. McClinton supported the development of
her students by sharing with them the knowledge and skills needed to
practice as social workers without racial and cultural bias.
ANNOUNCING THE HORTENSE McCLINTON LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP
In honor of this legacy, the School of Social Work is launching a
campaign to create a scholarship that will support students who
exemplify Mrs. McClinton’s pioneering spirit. Qualifying applicants
include: Students who are the first in their families to attain a graduate
education, those with a desire to focus on community-building, and
those who have an established history of work or public service that has
directly benefited those who have been previously marginalized.
