That's a really gorgeous paint job, just enough gore marring the clean colours to be evocative without being over the top. I love the Heresy World Eaters, there's something painfully tragic about them....they COULD have been noble, but they never really had a chance to be...and their own Gene Father hated the lot of them... I think my favourite bit from the Heresy stuff is the story of the Battle Of Skalathrax....where one character turns to another and says "It's okay, Kharn is leading them....he'll make sure things don't get out of hand..." Hilarity.

I really like the dynamic the Legion has with Angron. Other Legions are reunited with their Primarchs, who are warriors, or leaders of their worlds. Angron is a gladiator slave, with brain implants. During a failed slave revolt, he was going to die along with his fellow slaves, but the Emperor saves him, while Angron has to watch his only friends perish without him. So the Warhounds get this broken man as their father, many getting the same "Butcher's Nails" implants so they can be closer to him. But Angron is already a broken man, and his Legion willingly lets themselves become like him out of love. So like you said, Shakespearean.

Rereading the novels myself, and I love in book three when Angron shuts down Eidolon with the line, "Do not mistake our directness for stupidity" They were seen as brutes, but as Kharn himself says, they're the Legion who understands their purpose best. They were designed, bred, and trained to kill. The World Eaters don't pretend to be anything other than killers.

Small detail but I gotta admit, while I'm not normally a huge fan of pure Blood for the Blood God (I prefer to use it as an accent built up over matte browns and red-browns of dried blood), it looks **fantastic** on this mini. Creates a really nice bold contrast.

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Aye! And I suspect using varying layers of brown and browny-red would risk making it look less "blood" and more "dirty", due to the main colour being white tinted with brown - vs. if the wash had been put over another colour. That or I'm going crazy. Both are options lol

I finally beat painters block and painted up the start of World Eaters force. Thank you for the great tutorial. However somewhere along the way I missed a crucial step - the varnishing, they turned out rather muddy looking, presumbaly because I didnt varnish and/or used too much juice on each mini. This being said they still turned out great in my opinion, and as I will be running them as allies to Iron Warriors, their get up is if anything more fitting than a purer white would look. So thanks again for this, and all of your videos, it made painting them very simple (although painting white isnt fun and I opted for a different white), the steps easy to follow and give great results! Edit: I must have watched this video in preparation just shy of a dozen times, and didnt pick up the lines about the varnish being a be all and end all at that stage. Ooops!

Great video. Marine juice is so versatile, thanks for telling us about it. I have most of the paints you mentioned but no gloss varnish. Do you think we can get a similar result with skipping the gloss varnish and doing another white highlight?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
Жыл бұрын
I've heard others having good results without it, and I've taken to skipping the varnish stage as well. It seems to work more or less much the same, which is probably the amount of Medium that's in there. If you're having trouble with the new bottles of Shade having different consistency, stick to 1:1:1 with the amounts, but add a few drops of Army Painter Dark Tone into the bottle to darken the shade. Just a little at a time, and try it over a few primed spare parts for comparison until you're happy with it.
@Jalison36

Love your videos! The marine juice, is it just one pot of each mixed together?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
Жыл бұрын
It used to be just equal amounts of each, so one pot. Now that the shade pots are slightly smaller than the Lahmian Medium you might want to adjust, buuut I'm pretty sure that given the thicker consistency of the new shade line, it probably wouldn't hurt to try going with one pot of each still.

@SonicSledgehammerStudio
2 жыл бұрын
It'll look the same, but it will be matt. Not much difference except that. That's why I applied it after the matt varnish in this case; as a final step it'll keep the gloss, and it's not likely your miniatures are going to see such rough handling that you'll knock the red off. At least I'd hope not!

Where did pinch his chainaxe from? Edit: sorry for another two question, they just look too fantastic not to replicate. After using the primers (I forget the names of the colours), do you ever touch the white (side from fixing tiny mistakes)? also is the varnishing necessary? I'm new to painting so I'm a little unsure how that works.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
2 жыл бұрын
It's good practice to varnish your miniatures for handling and gaming, though not *strictly* necessary it's still something I'd suggest as being a good idea. As for touching up the primer, not really - with this particular style a few missing patches and some grimy shadows work really well.

The gloss has a very different surface which is far smoother than a matt varnish will give you. In theory you could try this without using the gloss at all, which would probably work better than trying to apply the shade over a matt, but it does make a difference.

Gloss varnish is great to shade over since it has a very smooth surface; you'll find shades run into the recesses and settle away from flat panels even more than usual. Once they're dry, it's back to the matt varnish!
