@@zakitycommentary You usually have to pay for hosting if you want to use a hosting service. Also if you want to have your own domain, you have to buy one and manage it. However it could be easy if someone else (like hosting provider) is doing everything for you :)

Good basic tutorial for a temporary tor service. I would have liked to have seen a long term server setup with nginx. I do not suggest ever using Apache to run a web server on tor.

Check out Network Chuck, he put a hidden service on a raspberry pi. Sadly, you'll still need to know a little Linux

Its still pretty much the same, "sudo nano /etc/tor/torrc" to edit the config and "sudo cat /var/lib/tor/hidden_service/hostname" to print the onion address to console.

I wouldn't say safe enough if you plan to continue using it for personal things, facebook, paypal etc... way too easy to get potential info/ social engineering to commit fraud etc. Or people knowing your business. Which to be honest I'm not happy people knowing my shit

"sudo su" will only execute .bashrc, so he will stay in the same directory. "sudo" would have logged him in as su in the /root directory since it also executes /etc/profile and .profile.

Sudo su is a cheat for when you’re a sudoer, but don’t have the root password. You get a root shell.

but what if my content isn't static? say i want to reverse proxy using nginx into the tor network. because i have this small chat server running that i want people to access without me having to register a domain name. i have a domain name already and its all set up but the domain name is likely to expire soon. and i'd rather not be reliant on a domain name register.

you put it on a machine that's it's someone's job to make sure it's always on, welcome to the world of buying hosting. or if your doing something that you might actually need the "dark" web for. you buy a raspberry pi put it on that. go to a starbucks and run it from a box in the bushes that looks like a rat trap but not enough like a rat trap that a exterminator is going to think it's a rat trap. make sure it has some way of destroying it's self. like a spring loaded nail over the SD card if you don't open it just right. remember to have a senior citizen who knows nothing about computers and does not know you buy the pi for you, garage sale in a different town dress like a clown and all they can remember is the clown outfit.

When i type sudo tor it gives me this error:/var/lib/tor/hidden_service/ is not owned by this user (root, 0) but by tor (43). Perhaps you are running Tor as the wrong user? Sep 28 07:00:51.920 [warn] Failed to parse/validate config: Failed to configure rendezvous options. See logs for details. Anyone knows how to fix it?I'm on manjaro and i'm a total begginer at linux and all this stuff so i'll be glad if someone could help me.

I don't think so. Firefox and Chrome block .onion sites even if you have access to tor. Anyways even if they do, you should not access tor using any other browsers as that is insecure.
