The reverse peace sign is an insult in Britain (flicking the V). It comes from the English Longbowmen being threatened with losing their drawing fingers if the French ever captured them in battle, during the Hundred Year Wars. So the English archers used to flick the v's to show the French they still had their drawing fingers.

That's a common belief, but there's no actual historical basis for it. Urban legend, I'm afraid. They're often hard to spot, but an occasional sign is when the explanation they offer is just a little too direct and convenient (similar to "backronyms"). Linguistic history tends towards the twisty.

@@michaelccozens yeah that's fair enough, history is full of half truth and outright fabrications. But at some point the gesture and the expression got intertwined somehow. it's a rather interesting expression since the intent has nothing to do with what the word means in any other context. In a way it's too bad you have subtitles on because it gives the punchline away a lot of times before it's said. Timing is everything in a comedy! I don't know why this movie didn't do better than it did because I always laugh profusely every time I watch it. The police force that Sergeant Angel comes from is not corrupt but he is just outperforming them so much that he's making them look bad and so they want to move him somewhere else. The first minute or so of the movie talks about how he excelled at pretty much everything during training and on the police force. Yes, that is Timothy Dalton and yes, he did play James Bond (an underappreciated version, in my opinion. I thought he did a fantastic job as Bond). "He has a twin!" I literally LOL'ed at that. No, that's a picture of himself as the store's manager and owner. The joke is that the picture of Skinner and Skinner himself are both in exactly the same pose with the same expression. The "reversed peace sign" is the British version of the finger here in America. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have done many films (and at least one TV show, "Spaced") together and they're all funny.

Doing "updated" versions of Shakespearian (and other) plays (and/or just swapping time periods for famous pieces in general) was/is/can be something of a well-known and long-standing creative crutch, too. The 1996 film wasn't the first to do it, and it's been a bit of a mark of misguided attempts at creativity, usually found in the lower rungs of the theatrical community (not to denigrate anyone's creative output, but some is more... resonant than others, and some don't grasp that "different" doesn't always mean "of value"). I think that was the other joke here; it's a terrible play by a terrible local theatre group (particularly the director's, uh, "trophy" star), but, like, what else would you expect in a tiny village?

Arthur Webley is played by the same actor who plays Mr. Filch in Harry Potter, and Jim Broadbent (who plays Frank Butterman here) played Professor Slughorn in Harry Potter

The play is one of my favorite jokes of the movie. It's not just a bad play of Romeo and Juliet, it's a bad play of the Romeo and Juliet movie with Leo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. That's why they're dressed like a knight and an angel, why they're using guns, and why they sing "Love Me Love Me". Its literally the worst adaptation of Romeo and Juliet ever performed and I would pay any amount of money to see it.

Sergeant? It's called English, before Americans started butchering it.

15:05 ha!! Steve's got a history of hating on Harry Potter movies. Although, he'd have loved to have a part in it for the money. Eyes bulging with imagined riches...

You may as well complete the trilogy with the hilarious World's End. I like them all, but Worlds End is my favorite.

Hi Kazzy. I live just down the road to the city of Wells in Somerset, where this is filmed. Wells is actually a very tiny city. It's a city because it has a cathedral in it. The cathedral is absolutely stunning.
