I'll give the hose man major props. While I was in the Marines I had to hump a heavy assed M60 machine gun, but this bad ass was pulling a frigging truck with a 10' hose. Big balls doesn't even begin to say how manly he is.

I worked for Cal Fire in the bay area. Napa county to be specific. The majority of people I worked with, get paid over $100,000 in 5 months. I am a licensed EMT. I have a certified ambulance drivers license. A degree in fire technology. Worked years as a volunteer firefighter.

Yeah, at the time of this video, dudes running the nozzle made around 13 bucks an hour. They were all seasoned GS4s, which was lucky that year. Most years, the crewmembers on engines are GS3, which for the last 3 seasons have made less than WA state minimum wage. Cal Fire and county departments are significantly different when it comes to pay. However, thanks to the infrastructure bill, we'll all get a bump of either 50% of our base rate or $20k per year, whichever is less.

Look a fireman and a firefighter! You guys need to get a set up like jrockyhill and give the hoseman a place to ride the truck while putting water down.
@Jimmythefish577

Why not just have a place for a firefighter to stand on the bumper so they can run a pony line, rather than have them walk 800 miles dragging line in front of the truck? Work smarter, not harder.
@Adelaide_Transit

It'd be cool and I think beneficial for you guys if you could get trucks you can ride on the deck with, they get used alot in Aus and making mopping up and responding to grass fires so much quicker :)
@tek9tim

Yeah, in brush particularly, it tends to be more effective to have a guy or gal on the ground with the nozzle. Multiple things there, better placement of the water under brush, more efficient use of that water meaning fewer trips out to find a tender and more ground covered in a tank, and less rekindle behind you. What you can't see from the video is the 2nd guy behind my engine with another nozzle catching the stuff that the first guy didn't quite get, so we're moving as fast as we can and still properly knock out the fire. We train pretty darned hard, and a long overnight shift like this is within our ability. Plus, I work for the Forest Service and don't spend as much time in the rangeland. Heck, in 21 years I've only done mobile attack like this about 10 times, and now I'm in management and won't likely ever again ☹

@@tek9tim Oh wow, very different style of firefighter compared to aus. Thats really interesting. what normally happens in Aus for a grass fire is the firies will do a convoy of trucks along the fire line, so itll be a lead pumper followed by a secondary and then a bulk water tanker and then a pumper behind the bwt, so when the initial is out, it pulls off, the 2nd pumper becomes the 1st and the 3rd becomes the second while the first refills at the tanker, we then have two fire fighters on the decks of the lead and secondary pumper with hoses and many of our newer pumpers have monitors on the front so they can angle them and hit the fire head. Great work that you guys do regardless of style however, shame you cant get out anymore though.

I mean it’s common sense to turn off the flow when you don’t need it, there were other “smart” things in the video that were more clever than to “turn off the water whenever he didn’t have flame”

Hi there! I work for the FS on an engine but this winter I am helping out the Forest SO by creating wildfire 101 classes for stakeholders. if you notice they started at the main road -we call that an anchor point -they "brought " the fire with them creating a line of burned out fuel and tied into the main fire -that way the fire couldnt hook around them
