When I was a student, I'd always been envious of large VFX companies with computing resources to groom, simulate and render hair and fur. I had Maya, but my experience, with Xgen was not great - buggy, descriptions breaking through the referencing system, and difficult/impossible to get it to work with third party renderers.
Today, the power is in our hands with Houdini, a decent modern computer, and a fast and easy renderer like Redshift.
While the hair system in Houdini not optimally designed for beginners, it's l it's 100% logical, comparatively fast bug-free, and at its core, only requires a few nodes to get short simulation fur. That's right, SIMULATED. Not static fur. This tutorial is a poke at fur simulation basics and I hope it helps with your projects!
