In 1919 Walter Gropius combined two art schools to form the State Bauhaus and won over talented teachers such as Wassily Kandinsky. The beginning of a revolutionary program - the union of arts and crafts. The idea of the Bauhaus is still one of the most successful export hits in German culture to this day.
The then #Bauhaus director Walter #Gropius built the #Auerbach house, his first private home in the Bauhaus style, in 1924. The villa in Jena, realized in collaboration with Adolf Meyer, is one of the most important testimonies to the beginnings of the Bauhaus. The authentic colored interior frame is particularly outstanding. It was only during the restoration of the house that it was discovered that all the interior walls were colored according to Alfred Arndt's design. Today the house, preserved in almost all of its details, shines again in its original 37 pastel tones.
This book also tells the moving story of the Jewish couple Auerbach, who shaped social life in Jena at the turn of the century, who socialized with Edvard Munch, fought for women's rights and with this house also set an example against the expulsion of the Bauhaus from Weimar.
