At the heart of the Côte des Légendes (near Brest in Finistère) the beautiful coastal village of Meneham hosts a historic guardsman's cottage with a massive stone roof, lying amidst a bunch of large granite bolders. The unusual building was originally built as a watch house to monitor the coastline, back at a time, when England and France were at war.
The surrounding site was later settled by farmers who soon turned to the sea to exploit its riches. Coastal fishing and seaweed harvesting became the inhabitants' main activities.
However, in the 20th century, the village became abandoned and fell into degradation due to local declines in the fishing industry. As a result the younger generations moved out of the village in search of work.
In the 1990s, the former village buildings were fully restored and transformed into a cultural and historical centre for visitors.
Today, Site de Meneham draws visitors from all over the world who come to see the traditional Breton architecture, the historic buildings, and the stunning coastal scenery.
