Inspired by the charm of Tulum, Mexico, the designers had a clear vision: to create a home that conveyed a sense of comfort and lived-in charm by integrating rustic and natural elements with modern lines and luxurious amenities. They designed a floor plan intended to accommodate family life, providing various stunning and inspiring spaces throughout the residence.
The designers aimed to create a home that exuded a comfortable and casual atmosphere, incorporating natural elements such as reclaimed wood and stones. To balance these rustic elements, they included modern lines and luxury amenities.
Material selection was crucial to maintaining the Tulum aesthetic. In the kitchen, they used natural stones such as limestone and quartz, combined with rustic wood on the ceiling and shelves. This combination brought an outdoor feeling indoors. Natural stones and wood were also used in the bathrooms, complemented by modern lighting and plumbing fixtures.
To soften the walls in various spaces, they applied a Portola Roman Clay finish.
Large sliding doors, designed in collaboration with LaCantina, were installed in the main living space and the media/flex room to achieve the Tulum, Mexico vibe. These doors open up the spaces, creating a true indoor/outdoor living experience.
Natural materials were a focal point throughout the home. They covered the 17-foot ceilings in the main living space with reclaimed tongue-and-groove wood paired with hand-hewn wood beams from a barn in Pennsylvania. This wood covering added dimension and warmth while concealing the structural steel supporting the roof and sliding door systems.
The materials were selected and used in unique and unexpected ways, incorporating luxury amenities. Natural materials like wood and stone were used throughout to give the home warmth and character. Large-scale window walls in the main living space were engineered to open completely, allowing for a true indoor/outdoor living experience, reminiscent of a vacation.
The furniture and finishing touches played a vital role in achieving the designers' goals. This was the first home they designed and built, fully furnished with pieces from their retail store, Market by Modern Nest.
