@@FRVT0 If I may wax nostalgic... It starts when you open your car door and you're met with 9:52am summer humidity unique to agrarian cities. You open the church doors to the whoosh of air conditioning and potpourri. There's a battle in the air between last night's exhaust from a dusty vacuum and the Old Spice of the deacon greeting you with this week's bulletin. You walk down the aisles to your family's pew. Each church row has a fragrance, and each column a dichotomy. The chain-smoker's wintergreen chewing gum, breath-of-merlot on the wife of the closeted music director, coffee and Copenhagen, and the empowering smell of old books courtesy the flapping hand-fans of frustrated mothers in proximity of deteriorating hymnals. To your left are the Smiths, to the right sit the Joneses. Finally you sit down on itchy burlap atop exhausted foam cushioning. For the rest of the sermon all that remains is the perfume or cologne of the person with whom you sinned the night before. How I miss committing them in that youth.

For all of his faults, Kevin Spacey is one of the greatest actors of this generation. The thing I love about his portrayal of Frank Underwood is how he utilizes the southern accent. When you see him interacting with the constituents from his district, he plays up the good old boy Southern accent but when he's in Washington or dealing with international dignitaries he loses the accent altogether. Amazing stuff.

The analysis of this speech is brilliant. First Frank pretends to go off book, like it comes from the heart. Creates common ground over the description of hate, then proceeds to forgive and absolve the parents of theirs (taking Gods role in providing forgiveness). He then uses his sympathetic position to transfer blame for the accident to God, only then after removing blame from himself does Frank bring up his personal story. Now he too is a 'victim of God' also deserving sympathy using this position to enforce his point. Now he is on a level footing with the parents he says not to trust their understanding, any physical evidence or reasoning for accident is to be discarded. After which he tells them to love God in spite of his actions. Frank replaces his role in causing the crash with God then using this position as a proxy acquires '3rd party' forgiveness for his actions through God. I'm not too well spoken so this might not make sense but i still love the phycology Frank uses to clear himself in the parents eyes.

One of my favourite scenes so far. Love how the music changes to something hopeful even though we all know he's bullshitting, he even tells us himself. It creates this really strange feeling, emotionally you want to go along with that hopeful message and music, but you know it's manipulative crap so the affect is totally unsettling. This is how manipulation works, when you fall prey to it it's because you *want* to believe it somewhere inside of you. Deep down the parents and others don't really want to believe that the girl died because of someone else's selfish ego, and that there are callous people in the world. It's much easier to believe that it was God's mysterious and benevolent plan that lifted the girl into heaven. The denial of the religious is easy to shape, and for some like Frank quite enjoyable. The way music is used in House of Cards is just genius, I don't think I've ever seen it exploited the way it is here. The camera angle is interesting too, especially since Frank often likes to adopt the father role when manipulating others.

Textbook sociopath at work. In reality, I don't think this speech would be received very well, unless it was being observed only by ardent supporters. Anyone with even the slightest awareness of context to the parents' displeasure with Frank Underwood would view this as manipulative and disingenuous. I think you are giving the public too much credence of being able to read between the lines. In today's time it's all about playing into reaffirming your own beliefs and vilifying the other side. Media plays into that. Social Media plays into that. I think politicians are the one who started the trend and they push it the hardest because it works. Personally, I think most politicians aren't (and don't have to be) as charming and manipulative. They are much more concerned with using overplayed identity politics phrases to just simply grift, or just benefit themselves for a political gain of some sort and it works sadly. We need more cautious voters but I don't think with a lot apathy for many people, and a lot of back patting to the minority, it does work. Most people are vote to support their team and see them win, and what they do when they win is just an afterthought.

Fundamental misunderstanding between hate and anger. You can be angry with someone you Love without hating him. It is one thing to be angry at God, another to hate him. Absolutely correct, and it's these subtle manipulations in one of the most fundamental parts of logic, the definitions, which builds up a whole house of cards that must follow. God does not take our loved ones. This speech is a blasphemy against God. I did feel the same though when my mother died, but it had nothing to do with God.

So God didn't make hell for people to suffer in either if they don't believe in him? God doesn't have any plan and everyone's life is completely meaningless? For a Christian you sure don't believe in any of the cornerstone of Bible and it's teachings. Which is for the best really as it's a horrible book

@@valtonen77 Well, aside from limiting peoples' potential by believing in the supernatural, really it's just the hellfire bits that need to be beaten into submission. No one deserves the Hell described in the Bible. The rest is a matter of careful discussion, but some parts are just damn simple. People deserve understanding, not suffering.

that's kind of the point of the scene, Frank is manipulating the crowd and the parents to stop hating him, under the pretext that "God works in mysterious ways" i.e. pawning off his own responsibility for their daughter's death on it being the will of god

I love.. the performance of this great actor, but I do hate "God". God is nothing but an illusion. People must get rid of it for their own good.

As someone with an.. agnostic?.. perspective, I don't hate the concept of God. It's ancient, and more complicated than you seem to think. Regardless, I agree, the belief in supernatural entities is a waste of peoples' energy and potential. I just want to the concept of Hell beaten into a pulp; That stuff is really unhealthy.
