@TheNN
5 жыл бұрын
I think at it's core, the BIGGEST thing that the show had with Frank, even towards the end, was that Frank was going up against people basically as bad as him. This was kinda continued even so with the pair going up against Claire. But the real thing is that we SAW what these people did, and how they were taken down. We saw that here as well, but, instead of it being this masterful stroke of back-and-forth scheming, plotting, and so on, with Frank coming out the victor because he was willing to be MORE RUTHLESS than anyone who was going up against him. Even if deep down we knew Frank would win, we watched because we wanted to see HOW it happens. As Frank himself even said, "I don't care whether you love me or you hate me, just as long as I WIN!" Claire though? She just...wins, because the writing says she's even more ruthless, apparently. Things just...happen, and we're supposed to cheer. She wins but there's never any worthwhile build up, and yet we're expected to love the 'pay off'. And the moment we disagree with the show on that? "Would you be saying the same thing if I was a woman?"

Just finished watching this season. What bothered me most was all the loose ends; there were storylines set up in previous seasons that were totally forgotten (remember Remy Danton and Jackie Sharp?) …I always thought the point of the show, given the name and the criminality behind the Underwoods was that it was all bound to fall apart in the end, as it ended I can't tell if that ever happened, it would have been good to actually see it. And yes, Frank was sorely missed but with Spacey's scandal the only alternatives were a Claire led show or no show and Claire leading could have worked ok since she had already started breaking the 4th wall and become president, but I guess the hole Frank left was too much for the writing team to handle.

I honestly thought this whole show was gonna play out like a Greek tragedy where Frank and Claire began as an ambitious power couple wanting a better life for themselves, gained all this power only to lose all of it and end up in an even worse position. It made sense as the main characters were established as being evil so it wouldn't shock the audience. Frank's death and Claire's pregnancy pointed to this. I thought their loyal servant/muscle, Doug, would betray them and Claire's child would end up in foster care/in poverty while Claire was either jailed or killed from Doug Stamper's actions. Instead Claire somehow kills Doug...why? She could have died or been jailed in an epic moment of glory. The epilogue could have been her child growing in poverty, with flashbacks of her and Frank's childhood for contrast and showing her and Frank make their political marriage power pact together. Everything the Underwoods built, now laying in ruins. Edit: What I mean by 'in an epic moment of glory' is she could have had some good lines and good scenes once people discovered what she was up to or once she realized Stamper was about to kill her (I personally would have preferred jail time because it means she can deliver the baby and tragically lose it to an impoverished foster care family). Claire's last scene was actually Doug Stamper's moment of glory instead with his major plot reveal and even there it feels a little rushed like the writers cut part of it to save time or because they're stupid or something.

The Diane lane family was a bad idea because they chose to bring them in during the final season. It’s one thing if they are some new family that is rich that has decided to get into politics. But this family was supposed to have a long history with the Underwood’s. In fact they built this up as the family frank turned to once he was completely shunned by Claire. Why didn’t he turn to them for help when she was actively running against him in a previous season? That is just bad writing

Claire was a cold calculating ice queen with little emotion. That's what I had wrong with it. She felt up tight the entire time! I dunno, truthfully as a guy I wasn't interested in seeing her remenisce with her college besty doing curtsying poses. I remember when Frank would take somebody in a backroom and say the most effed up stuff you could imagine a politician saying. I dunno, not saying Claire couldn't have done that.......but she didn't. At least not for me.
@JZGreenline
5 жыл бұрын
I think Claire is interesting, but TBH I found her to be a giant PITA last season. I found season 5 kinda annoying that the Underwoods couldn't get along. I mean they've been married for how many years? I just felt the whole thing was weird. And this season For the first time in forever, Claire was utterly alone and they didn't explore that part at all. Apparently, she's just invincible and feels nothing. They killed off Frank, Doug is out of the picture, and even her lover Tom Yates. Does anything mean anything to her? Even Frank as ruthless as he was would display some emotion. He cared for some good country BBQ, and was hurt Freddy turned against him. He cared about his wife Claire, but this cold heartless ice-bitch does just not show an ounce of care for anyone. She's not relatable. It's fun watching a cold ruthless bitch burn everything down. That's why everyone loves Cerces from GoT, but Cerces cared for her kids and was devastated when they died. That's relatable. Claire Underwood is just not a relatable character and I don't believe for a second she felt anything after killing all those people. Also I've seen reviews of this, really playing up the ultra-feminist angle of this, using terms like Claire is "a queen" and this character is a "misogynist", and "we don't need no man" (aka Kevin Spacey, the star of the show). So I will talk about this briefly because it's relevant. The thing with Kevin Spacey is a tragedy for everyone; for the show, for the people involved, and for himself and his now ruined career. Despite that, they managed to push forward an create IMO a great show, in spite of losing a star actor. That being said, Claire is not Francis. The way the two achieve their goals is entirely different. And Claire despite being more ruthless, is a more uninteresting character to watch, when she plays the "I'm a woman" card. And They played up the whole " I'm a woman card" a lot this season, and it was just boring, so see her feign ignorance at times, and pretend to be weak. I don't buy for a second anyone would believe her. Claire is the fkin president. No one doesn't believe she isn't a cold-hearted ice-bitch, who would do anything to win. So that being said they should have dropped the act and have her do some real leg-work to win people over. It would have been more interesting. And having reviewers defend this aspect from the perspective, that it's interesting to watch that women can lead a country, by complaining about being a woman, seems to be missing the huge irony, in the fact that Claire literally plays the woman card to just get people to support her in-spite of actual effort in the show, and that this is interesting to watch, despite the part of actual effort by the writers to make this more entertaining. Maybe the goal is to manipulate the audience into thinking that was worth watching, as the voter base in the show was convinced with little effort Claire was worth supporting. I don't buy either one. Especially in the wake of our most recent election. It would have been far more interesting to entertain the effort of why this blatant identity politics would not have worked as women from Claire's on cabinet turned against her. Women are not some collective whole, that supports other women, just because they are women. I wish they would have explored this topic, as it would have been so much more fascinating. We got a few cabinet members who turned against her but nothing really. Luckily the story didn't wholly fall apart because of the excellent writing, but its so obvious the Francis death made no sense to the plot, and having to write around it must have been an incredible task. That being said if they can take a more deep look at the feminist angle and the limits of identity politics and perhaps, humanize Claire to make her a more relatable character, this show might have a season 7, but as it is I'm definitely not interested in seeing more of this. especially now that (ALL) of my fav characters are dead, leaving ONLY Claire.

Finally someone said it! Them completely bringing apart the marriage was really painful for me as a viewer. The show was as it's best when both of them worked together. Like Tom Yates, I came for frank but I stayed for their fascinating marriage. Season 5 wasn't good but they completely ruined everything in season 6. The characters they had built completely fell apart. I mean you want us to believe that frank was coming to the white house to kill Claire? That Claire felt NOTHING after his death? He was suddenly her biggest regret? Their marriage wasn't ideal but it was the best part of the show. And Claire breaking the 4th wall really didn't work.

I think that's the point, she really has no emotion. She's a straight sociopath, with no likability. Honestly, her character/role was perfect as Frank's partner in all his misdeeds, but it just doesn't work that well as the lead. It probably could've worked if they had given her a likable partner in crime, but she literally screws every single person that's close to, or works with her over. Shes horrible.

I don't think anyone is under any delusion that this is a popular move at this point. This is supposed to be an unlikable character, IMO. It's supposed to be hot garbage. They didn't want to carry on this show they wanted to kill it. Just like Disney wants to kill Star Wars. Capitalism has entered a new era and the name of the game is complete mental domination. They don't fucking care if you like their shows and movies because people are addicted at this point. Like it or not it HOC's was a total dumpsterfire without Spacey. I hated the stupid way they killed off the great character of Tom Hammerschmidt, also Leann in S5, and poor Doug. Actually SO MANY characters throughout S1-S8 were dumped like used lolly-wrappers into the garbage-bin 🤷♀️S8 really became so ludicrously unbelievable with the sloppy & loose-end-riddled writing. I'm an INTJ woman myself and reeeeally disliked and felt nothing for Claire's character whatsoever. She basically was just another greedy nasty rich-bitch who demanded everyone give her everything at all times, like a giant Karen-osaurus. No personal growth or character arc, just more enabling en masse really. They replaced a fucking amazing actor with a less talented one. That was gonna end badly anyway. I mean, had they brought Brad Pitt as an antagonist with a link to Frank, and kept Claire, but she played second fiddle... it could have been salvaged. You don't replace Oscar material with less than that. That's basic. I think they just did it for PR reasons (ie. we don't need no alleged kiddy fiddlers). And it backfired. Horribly. But I don't blame them. If they cancelled it or kept Spacey, the blowback would have been bigger. So they just went minimum effort with it. I mean, I don't like it. But they were in a Sophie's choice situation.

Frank Underwood is House of Cards and House of Cards is Frank Underwood. It's like trying to make Dallas without JR Ewing!? We all know how that turned out. Don't we? Absolutely ridiculous! Robin Wright just doesn't have the acting ability, gravitas, screen presence or charisma to carry a show of this magnitude. Haven't even watched it and not going to bother! Good riddance!

Thank you, the last season terrible way for the series to go out, put together badly and WRONG. Claire Underwood was interesting and scary for 5 seasons. In the sixth, she was just (almost cartoon) nutZ !!!

SERIES 6?! Jesus, I quit halfway through 3 because it gave too much time to other characters beside Frank (namely Claire). I hope the whole gender thing is Claire being manipulative rather than the writers winking at the audience, Billions went a bit too on the nose anti-Trump in season 3 as well. I still enjoyed it though.

You "literally" put yourself through hellfire to talk about this? This show is also "literally" ass cancer? A couple sentences later, you "literally" fell asleep while watching this. So, the first two times, you meant to say "metaphorically," the opposite of literally. But in the 3rd example...Did you also mean you didn't really fall asleep, or did you literally fall asleep? You know what also works, "This show is ass cancer." Period. In the words of Inigo Montoya, "I don't think that word means what you think it means."

...I would have liked it if I had NOT seen the previous episodes with Kevin Spacey at the helm. I lasted HALF of episode one of season 6 and then canned it. Robin Wright is indeed, a quality actress, but the producers couldn´t expect her to simply "become Frank" , emulate his character and then further expect the series to move on with the same success. I have not read many positive viewer reviews but the media industry reviews all seem to praise Robin and the show as some kind of "new awakening!"

Diane Lane's character was terrible. Her brother and her son were terrible. (Waste of Greg Kinnear's talent.) Claire was always fascinating because she owned Frank - and when Frank disregarded her advice or went against her, it backfired. Claire was the 'man behind the curtain'. The power. I give the show credit for trying to put a nice bow on the series after Spacey threw a sh1tbomb into it. It came up short, but they did what they could.

what was the point of even making that video? as if NOBODY said that 'oh, there is no point watching the show now spacey is gone?" before. No, really. Everybody has already said that. It's safe to assume people who did decide to watch the show knew that in season 6 there would be no Frank and they were curious to see how Claire can do it. The problem is not the character of Claire. She COULD have carried the show. We've seen her growth through the seasons. we saw that she used to be milder and had principles, but grew stronger and more ruthless, she had a great character ark.It would have been interesting how she would handle same kinds of problems. How she would manoeuvre and manipulate her way in the big politics. The problem with the show is the ridiculous, ridicuolous, ridiculous in its ridiculousness story. First of all, the story is all over the place. And secondly, it's just silly. It was such a tonal change. I mean, previous seasons had that from time to time. But now... I actually kinda enjoyed this season because it was so bad it's good kinda thing.

The worst part about the season is the abrasive feminism (like the scene where Claire introduced her all female cabinet). Obviously the show was not going to be anywhere near as good without Spacey, but it could have been a decent ending and they could have made Claire an interesting character. Instead, you end up disliking her because she is driven by insanely biased principles and single-mindedness.

The series died when they kicked Kevin Spacey off of it. He was kinda the central axis this series was spinning around and clearly Claire was just a third wheel mostly who nobody gives a fuck about. The only thing she does is keeping a bland dumb weird expression for pretty much everything. I think the writers were stoned off their brains when they wrote the series finale, Thanks guys you are the guys who truly killed Franks "Legacy" and his show. Dick heads.

I slept in almost 40% of season 6 and I didn't even bothered to rewatch the missing part during my sleep. If kevin spacey was douche bag they should have just replaced the actor but not the character. Seriously the worst series ending I ve ever watched and it's already 2020 and it's worse than this year. Seriously I'd give negative stars to season 6

I don’t think any of the gender stuff is meant to be taken literally, she’s taking advantage of a card that, were frank able to use it, he would. It’s about conning people and avoiding questions. Like in the military base, when asked if she would’ve asked that of a man the answer is obviously yes, but Claire had no plan at the time or she didnt want to tell her so she played her. Yes Frank is/was a more charismatic character but Claire was never exactly like him, Frank’s methods were brute force, Claire’s were always more subtle and sometimes more cruel.

What struck me the most in this season was the fact that even though throughout the previous 5 seasons I have repeatedly told people that the casting was fantastic (and I still agree), and that everyone performed (past tense) so well that the show as a whole was a cumulative effort - I realised in this season the MASSIVE extent to which this show depends on Kevin. Sure even earlier Kevin Spacey had tremendous influence, but now it is insane to see how the other cast doesn't have the same impact that they had before. Granted that the story was fucking fuckity fuck weak. That shows on the cast. They themselves don't feel convinced. My only grouse is that they could have atleast made proper season and not rushed through this. To be honest it was also dry and difficult to follow because nothing grew organically here. Yes I did miss Spacey, but I was open to a show without him because i believed the story would be stong enough. But nope, the makers spat in my face, pissed on and shat on me for good measure. And then made 500 other people do it

All they had to do was recast Frank. Josh Brolin maybe? That character needed to get his comeuppance otherwise the whole thing was for nothing. No pay off. No resolution. Just pointless.

I was actually enjoying the first few episodes more than I thought it would. But the story for disjointed. I didn’t really see any consistency in the characters motivations. One minute Doug is digging up a buried body then he’s walking back into the White House with no one caring. I expect people to shift loyalties based on what seems best for them at the time but the way it was done didnt make sense. I would have overlooked that and was excited for the final 15 minutes. But that ended up being a let down. They built up that she was going to start a nuclear war then announcing an assasinatuon plot and for some reason Doug walks into the Oval Office past the secret service and they don’t even react. No one is freaking out about a pending nuclear war and foiled assassination?

I get being a female is a thing...but jesus...it wasn't ever an issue until season 6 and then it was all...female empowerment...when in the others it was her lack of experience, not that she was a female. I'm 1 season in and bored out of my brain with this throughout. Not to mention the entire new cast.

Just binged on the whole series, after enjoying the first 5 series I was so disappointed with the ending, I mean, come on! The president kills the ex chief of staff in the oval office! I know this show is based on the shenanigans that on in politics, but really? Too many loose ends left, perhaps on purpose for a possible series 7?. Shame kevin spacey was dropped, he hadn't been found guilty of anything at that time or now for that matter.

I was not going to watch this season and didn't when it first came out, but after rewatching the series I just got curious of how they where going to do this without Kevin Spacey? And this was the most boring, useless shit I've ever tried to watch. I now still think of the season 5 finally to be the real ending since at that moment the Underwood house of cards has fallen. This was just a flop, none of the other characters could carry the load of Frank Underwood. I wished more actors would have just left after the removal of Spacey.

I think they should have done a season where Frank was away but not dead. In this way, characters would have still acted on his behalf while his shadow lurked in the background. Claire could still be Claire. This would also allow the producers to wait until Spacey’s trial to come to an end before deciding a way forward.

I never liked Claire as a character, she always came across as whiny. That's not to say Frank was a saint, he's done things I didn't always agree with or root for him to do, but damn is Claire an unlikeable character. The viewer can never be sure if anything is actually important to her, anything at all. I'm not even sure if she actually likes power. She says she does, but I was never sold.
