The noble Lord Stockton ne Harold Macmillan speaking fluently and correctly at an advanced age without notes! Who can do that today?
@RanmaSyaoranSaotome

Compare this to what we have today: Boris, Dorries, Mogg, Raab, Gove and Patel. Stockton wouldn't have even allowed them to step foot in office.

The great sadness is, that there are no more great thinkers and/or orators in Parliament these days. Not One! The party machines have totally killed off candidates with charisma and erudition. All they want now are yes men. Tories want Brexiteers and kicked out any remainers. BoJo can't string a sentence together without a pause, or and um or an err or just lies to the house. Labour is so totally split and Starmer has zero charisma at all. You're right Gandalf MacMillan would be scathing about the Tories and Labour these days.

Truly remarkable. Here we see a statesman of learning and discernment; erudite, educated and articulate. Extraordinary to see a man of his years delivering such an address without a single note - (of necessity due to his blindness). Inspirational.

Jack Sheldon He would have “accepted” a hereditary earldom in 1964 but Harold Wilson, Ted Heath, and James Callaghan disallowed hereditary peerages. MacMillan probably didn’t want a life peerage because it’s not hereditary and it has the lowly rank of baron.

To watch this from across the pond in 2021, on a little screen I’m holding while lying in bed-what a dizzying marvel it is, the technological advances of the times. Makes my head swim to watch this and think of all we’ve lost, but can still keep alive and revisit because of these technologies. It’s almost too much to even begin to comprehend. Also...it does indeed seems to me like PM Macmillan must’ve a pretty good guy, even though he was a conservative. Lord Stockton just has a truth and a richness of history pouring from every minute feature of his being & energy. What a time to live the prime of one’s days, England in the 20th Century. Hard to know how I can feel so sweetly & painfully nostalgic for a time & place I never experienced

Is it brandy on the coffee table next to the Speaker? (if he's the speaker)
@nathanielgrant3909
2 жыл бұрын
It's a carafe of water. In both houses, however, it was a common occurence, in particularly long sitting for the dispatch box [or equivalent space] to have a carafe filled with the refreshment of choice of the main speakers involved. More recently Kenneth Clarke, when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer, had a decanter of brandy/whiskey next to him throughout each Budget he gave. The 'speaker' in the House of Lord during the time of this session with the Earl Stockton is Lord Hailsham [Quintin Hogg]: who was in fact the Lord Chancellor.
