Honestly this is the happiest possible ending for Viserys. On his last day of life he gathered enough strength to walk on his own all the way to the Iron Throne (where thankfully his brother helped him the rest of the way), managed to get his family together for a final dinner, and miraculously managed (if only for a brief moment) to bring the family back together. Yes he was in agonizing pain, but his last thoughts before he died were of his family gathered around him and having a genuinely happy dinner. This episode was also slightly triggering for me because mother fought stage 3a breast cancer on and off for almost 10 years and when the radiation and chemotherapy hit her their hardest she looked as pale, thin, and drained of energy as Viserys did. And just like Viserys my mom fought longer and harder than anyone thought a human being was capable of. So while it was only for a brief moment I was so happy that Viserys actually got to see his family happy and together again.

To me, the most tragic part of the dinner is that you can see a brief glimpse of how good Alicent and Rhaenyra would have been if they worked together. And both of them seem to realize it too. Unfortunately, it's ten years too late. One night of goodwill cannot mend the rift because they've already poisoned the well for the next generation and, with Viserys' death, there are no more opportunities for healing.

So powerful & moving. As soon as the throne room went silent, the doors opening & the King’s Guard knight started bellowing his titles: “King Viserys of House Targaryen. The first of his name. King of the Andals, and the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. Protector of the Realm” as King Viserys walked in weakened but like a boss, he showed he was a tough mofo & a legend. That should make anyone even the most stoic person a bit teary eyed. Viserys did that walk which required Herculean effort in his frail state was done purely on love & will. Then when Viserys turned to see his brother Daemon supporting him & showing his brotherly love by helping him get up the thrones stairs, it made all viewers tear up & get goose bumps. What a scene! Intesiboe acting by Paddy & Matt. It got Adam & Jay emotional. Ramin Djawadi also did some of his best music here that just added that much more Emotional depth to the scene. Incredible work. Thrones was amazing across the board but I think Paddy & Matt upped the bar for any actors joining the world of Ice & Fire.

And why does that concern them? Why is it a big deal if Rhaenyra hooks up to people she wants? Why is it a big deal if she lies being touched by Daemon? Why is it a big deal if the Strong boys are not a Velaryon? They are still accepted by Laenor and Corlys, and legitimized by Viserys. Laenor can't produce a child, so having no child will weaken Rhaenyra's claim. The accusation is only a big deal because the btchs in the Greens like to nitpick Rhaenyra to justify their r@pist male son to be on the throne.

Not a lore expert, but from what I remember from the books, the Velaryon's where historically the master of ships in the council and subservient to Dragonstone, which belonged to the heir to the throne/Targeryen. During Robert's Rebellion, they backed the Targeryens and all the houses that did, were pushed off to the side in favor of the houses that backed Robert. In the events of GOT, not sure if the show mentions it, but they back Stannis in the War of the Five Kings as he was the lord of Dragonstone. It gets a little murky for me here, but I know that the head of Driftmark is killed in the Battle of Blackwater Bay. I think Tyrion has an epic battle in one of their main ships. And last I remember of them, is that the bastard brother called Aurane Waters, is named the new master of ships by Cersei in part to win them over to her side and because she starts having an affair with him. He's supposed to resemble a true Targeryen. She commissions him to build a fleet for the crown and intend to send them off to sack Highgarded, the Tyrell home as war between Cersei and Margery is looming, but then Cersei is imprisoned by the High Sparrow and Aurane takes the fleet dips out. It is said that he becomes a pirate with his fleet in the stepstones and I don't think he's mentioned again. That fits inline with the Valeryon blood and love of the sea.

They were closely tied to the Targaryens since before Aegon's conquest (his mother was a Velaryon) and with Targaryen rule since the conquest. When Targaryen rule disappeared their influence and importance diminished too.

Re: Alicent’s misunderstanding - in fairness, that’s what happens when everyone in the family is named AEGON! Think of some new names, Targaryens. How about Bill? King Bill Targaryen has a nice ring to it. There have been dozens of Targaryens down through Westerosi history and only about five different names among them. There are more Aegons, Viseryses and Jahaeryses that you can shake a stick at. No one has completely clean hands in all of this and one argue that Viserys started all of this by separating two best friends by making Alicent his daughter’s stepmother. And, only six months after her own mother died, no less. But, that just shows that he didn’t really value the power of their friendship. They were girls so he expected them to just adjust and get with the program. Alicent has some cause to want her son, Aegon, on the throne. Or, at least, she did in the past. Rhaenyra has shown, by cheating on Laenor and having illegitimate children and lying that she doesn’t have the character to take the throne. But, now that Aegon has turned out to have a sexual character five times worse than his half-sister, that excuse is out the window. I question the power dynamic between Rhaenyra and Ser Criston when they first slept together but I wouldn’t go so far as to say she forced him. Aegon, however, is a rapist, straight up. So, really, in the end, what Alicent can’t get over is that Rhaenyra will rule because she’s a woman. I don’t think she even realizes her own prejudice but she can’t get over that cultural hurdle. Vaemond, on the other hand, really was getting screwed over. Just like Jay said, Luke is not Laenor’s son. It’s obvious. And, sure, he was nasty about it in the end but imagine having to sit on that info for 17 years. He couldn’t say anything because of the orders of the king but, in this case, the orders are corrupt because Viserys knows they aren’t legitimate. He’s been bending the rules for Rhaenyra who has only herself to blame. So, Vaemond has understandably bitterness. If the title wasn’t going to go to Baela, it should go to him, as Corlys’ brother. So, he was nasty but he was right. I think Rhaenyra would make a good queen but she’s also very self-indulgent and unwise. Viserys *told her*, back when she was a teen and was accused of sleeping with Daemon, to be careful of her sexual reputation and she didn’t listen! She got with the one man in the whole Seven Kingdoms who looked as unlike her husband as possible. Couldn’t she has slept with someone blond, at least? I bet Ser Tyland Lannister would have kept his mouth shut and he’s pretty cute! And, as for apologizing first, Rhaenyra didn’t apologize last episode when Luke tore Aemon’s eye out. That was the time to apologize not call it, as she did, a “regrettable accident”. The difference this episode was that it was just the family. She thinks it’s beneath her to apologize in public. So, she was sincere, no doubt, but I don’t mistake it for altruism or peace-making. Her apology was six years overdue. What causes the Dance of the Dragons is the rot that occurs - symbolism of the rats running around - when power becomes self-interested and corrupt. Sure, Viserys and Rhaenyra are likable but that doesn’t mean that they still aren’t wrong. Rhaenyra shouldn’t be exempt from justice. Or, alternately, she should be treated the same way a male heir with bastards would be treated: he ascends the throne and legitimizes them. So, Viserys should have long ago either punished Rhaenyra or shrugged and said, who cares? Many princes have bastards; she can have hers too. It’s these halfway measures that are killing everyone.

Driftmark is still around for GOT and in the books there are indeed Velaryons mentioned, but they lost their wealth and prestige.

Episode 8 was terrific, all around. The look on Viserys' face as he surveys the room -- he knows this will be the last time these people will be in a room together, "peaceful" like this. He knows his feeble body and harried breath is the only thing keeping them from tearing each other apart. In fact, as soon as he is carried out of the room, violence erupts immediately. I feel so bad for him. What a performance by Paddy Considine. And I think we were all theorizing that Alicent might misinterpret Viserys' last words, and it seems that's exactly what happens. She cannot in good conscience thinks this is the one (1) time Viserys is lucid enough to make proclamations on who should sit the throne... but she will use it as justification to install her son on it nevertheless. The final two episodes cannot come any sooner!

Daemon back to snatching up those dragon eggs but this time it’s legit. The dragon eggs are more precious than gold. The blacks vs the greens check the colors everyone is wearing.

Driftmark is still ruled by House Velaryon in the GoT era, but they’re a much less powerful house because the wealth earned by the Seasnake’s voyages have long since run out. Driftmark is sworn to Dragonstone, and as such House Velaryon has loyally fought for Stannis (except for one notable bastard that Cersei elevated in her court and was then betrayed by in Feast for Crows).

Yall do know you can't steal a dragon right? That's one of the reasons Viserys didn't even talk about Aemond getting Vhagar on Driftmark in the prior episode.

Don't assume that because a family didn't appear in the show that they don't exist in the GoT timeline. The show cut MANY characters and whole families. For example, there was a Hightower who fought Ned at the Tower of Joy. There were 3 Kingsguard not 2 guarding Lynnna.

ironic that this seemingly 'fake' emotions at the dinner was actually the most authentic we've ever seen them. It was the only time they were NOT putting on their masks. It shows that without the line of succession and primogeniture and all the other royal madness mirroring what existed in medieval Europe, these people could've been really good friends. But the system they lived in destined them to murder each other. It's like being born into rival blocks in southside chicago. You don't have much of a choice. The dinner sequence was so despairing because they all knew it was the last moments of solitude, but at the same time they probably did briefly delude themselves into thinking "maybe, just maybe things will work out". They’re all unwitting participants in a tragic theater that’s about to unfold.
