I used to work for United Van Lines. I took the training for how to pack as I would be the person people called to confirm their move and such, but they would be stuck with how to pack so I would give people over the phone, suggestions. One thing people should always do is have a OPEN FIRST box or two- that is last to go in the truck and the first to come out. This would have chargers, cords, land line phone, basic kitchen supplies for that first day - plates etc... soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, pills - medicine, back pain pills!!! etc., a few towels, hair dryer, brush, rags if your new home needs some cleaning. We also had a box of clothes, shoes etc... for church, as we moved on a Friday/Saturday. Have another OPEN FIRST box - for couch legs, etc...screws for various pieces of furniture, bookshelf pegs, dish liquid and a lysol wipes to clean down the fridge and cupboards, and bathroom, before you put away items. Have a few grocery and garbage bags ready for garbage/items that may have been left behind. Decide before hand where and which wall hangings/pictures you are taking. Get rid of the other ones. Think of what you will be eating, for each meal and snacks for at least those first 2-3 days - especially if you have small children but really for everyone. Or have the number for pizza or other take out in the area. Most people eat badly those first few days or skip meals, which can make them tired. Boiled eggs are a good stand by- make sure you have a pot if you plan on that sort of cooking.

Aloha Lisa Just came across your video and loved it, showed it to may wife who is also an Interior Design grad. Our moves are logistically a little different but your experience is helpful. We were wondering if Max Sold gets paid a percentage of what they sell or if you pay them directly and who determines the sale amounts for your items that they list online. Hope your still loving Florida we plan on a move there in a few years.

Great question! We did the managed model, which includes Max Sold coming and taking pictures and cataloguing the items. You can alternately do the seller model where you take care of that. But the model we did was 30% commission + $700 to Max Sold. From their support page: For our Seller Managed model, where the seller is responsible for the photography, cataloging, and supervising pickup (while our team is responsible for the auction hosting, online advertising, and collection of payments ) the fee is the greater of $300 or 30%. (Discounts for single high-end items are possible when included in the auction, such as a $20,000+ vehicle.) Marketing is included - there are no up-front fees. Based on these commissions, we suggest you have at least 50 lots to host a MaxSold managed auction, as it is more economical for your time. The commissions cover cataloging, photography, marketing, online auction, preview (optional), pickup, invoicing, payment to the seller and the final settlement report. However, if you have less than 50 lots, it is better to host a Seller-manged sale. Don't worry. We have a cataloging app to help you through the process.

Max Sold Managed Model, rather: For our Maxsold Managed model, where our team is responsible for photography, cataloging of items, and supervising pickups, our total fees are 30% + $700

Hey Lisa, our family is relocating to Florida from Toronto too! I wanted to know what the border process was like with the Uhaul. Do you have to do certain paperwork before hand for it and what about the car?

Hey! Congrats on the move! For the border we had to part and have border agents review our visas. They then came out to search the uHaul (no special paperwork required), but it was so ridiculously overpacked they kind of took our word for it. The car you will have to register within 6 months of starting work in the USA and get local plates.

We have moved 5 times in 5 years and will likely move again in the spring to a more permanent place. It's been insane.

Not that anyone asked but my takes: Purging- yes. We have tried to purge every move and the less there was, the less stress 110%. Paralysis from decision fatigue is so real. I think dealing with all your possessions and the sentiment makes it even harder. I pack mainly by room and then use pattern duct tape and make a key. That way everyone is aware of where things go. Holy cow packing for a couple weeks for a long distance move is essential! Especially depending on how you're moving your stuff! We moved to FL from MO over a week or so and we needed that stuff.

This was such good motivation! I still have boxes 5 months after our last move and we'll likely move again in 6-7 months.

@@jennafryer8241 yup! Any transition can take time and a big move is a big one. We felt all the feels. Sometimes you need to remind yourself of the why behind the move as you settle in.
