This is super helpful! The easiest explanation I've heard is "gesso = acrylic + tooth. It has a minimal amount of acrylic binder *because that's what the tooth is for.* The tooth gives much better grip." This definitely helps visualize that!

Hell if you really want tooth, maybe you could break the bank on some Golden™ silverpoint ground. Not really lol gesso is fine

I’m doing wood panels from Home Depot for the first time. They are huge. I’m going to try Kils2 primer. I will save all my expensive gesso for canvases lol

depends on the project you're doing, but per my tests I hope you understand the need for quality materials for the longevity of a project

@@cinderblockstudios right. I kinda changed my mind. I did one coat of kils2… now I plan to build a few layers of gesso on top of it… I have 3 panels. I only did 1

Many of my student oil paintings used kilz and bullseye primer spray. Id like to get a good spraygun for actual gesso though.

Mixing wall acrylic primer with acrylic glue works very well, I am doing for 20yrs, not much problem,

What happens if you mix both the house paint and gesso

I imagine it would smooth out the gesso slightly, but I'm not sure why you'd do that if you already have the gesso

What about flat paint I see that you used a satin finish and satin has more resistance to water

I imagine that would marginally improve the odds, but probably is still not the best application

What about house primer? I've used that on a wood panel with oil enamel on top. I was wondering if the primer would grip the wood better than gesso, but I did not have time to test. I just went with the primer, which is how I paint wood frames.

It's not that the primer/gesso grips the wood so much as if the paint gripping the primer or not.
