With so much of the house in advanced decay, that gave you license to use your own creative skills. Victorian can play nicely with Craftsman, and your kitchen manages to be 21st-century in an unobtrusive way. Even if the woodwork had originally been unpainted, so much was unrestorable that painting would be the only way for consistency anyway. If the first occupants could come back and look at your home, I think they would approve.

Unfortunately these old homes were not usually insulated and I'd they were it was with old newspaper....which fall down the wall and get demolished by mice and bugs. So what was common was to close off anything unnecessary/not used and to drop tall ceilings to make it easier to heat...especially when money was an issue! This happened a lot when in the 70s fuel cost went stupid! A lot of places didn't know about pest control (which I'm not even sure when that started, 60-70s? Idk I do know my step dad was doing it in the 80s) or were too poor to pay for it. Sadly, my grandmothers house, that was ca. 1880s, my aunt tore down to put up a double wide! Yes....I hear every one of you gasp in horror!! So did I when I found out. I miss that old house. The kitchen was at the back...where it use to be detached from the main house. They had a covered breeze way from the kitchen that went from kitchen to main house. They enclosed that and widened it making a bed room and a bathroom (cast iron tub) a hallway and coat closet. They also added onto the side of the kitchen and made a wash room. My grandfather was a blaster. He would use dynamite to blast tree stumps from ground that was being cleared. He had a whole garage of colbalt glass he found on these clearings. The original!!! and my aunt had the whole thing bulldozed down just like the house!! I was so FREGGIN mad!!! I don't get why ppl don't want to keep things that are old?!?! I LOVe old things! My mom says it's bc I have an old soul, lol. Idk, I just know the older the better!!

Lots of original wood, fixtures, and even some remaining wallpaper. Its been on and off the market since 2014, so I'm hoping I have a chance to get it . I still have to save up , but I think it would be beyond amazing when fully restored. And it won't be too hard to do! Most of the work is already done! Though I will have to strip paint off of the original wood panels, * shudders* such gorgeous natural wood, and they painted it white! ( the photos show it halfway done)

@@patriciabecker8573 thanks. That house ended up selling just a few weeks ago, my problem is that my husband and I are both unemployed due to covid, so no mortgage lender even gives us a second glance. But it's OK, we moved back to California last week, moved in with friends. So now I should be able to find a job easier. Then we can save up more and get a place. Our plan is to save up enough over this next year to either buy a place outright or put enough down on it that we can pay it off in a year or two. Luckily the houses we like don't tend to be very expensive. Anywhere from 30,000 to 200,000. Admittedly, the higher prices would take us longer to pay off, even when paying extra each month, probably 5 to 8 years, with me working 72 hours a week.

Same goes for all clocks with weights, and if you have a clock, that is key wound, then just only wind up the right side (usually) 🙂

My in-laws bought a ramshackled historic home from the 1700's with 3 lots and a huge barn.. It had squirrels living in the oven, pool was overgrown, it was horrible. They paid over 300k in the early 80's, which was a lot. They redid the whole home. Eight bedrooms, 7 fireplaces, but no bathrooms because people used outhouses back then, but they had bathrooms put in. They did such a beautiful job that it was in House Beautiful magazine. Much of the work they did themselves but hired contractors to do electrical, plumbing and install bathrooms. It even had a door in the side of the parlor to move a casket in, years ago people had viewings in their homes. They refinished the original wood floors which were large planks with wood pegs instead of nails, it was fantastic. It ended up being a gorgeous Victorian home. They wanted to open it up as a B&B but it wasn't the right area.

Our Restoration Nation America architectural history does not recognize an “Edwardian” period. Our recognized (scholarly)periods are pre-Colombian, Colonial, Federal, Neo-Classical, Victorian (which some scholars have running to 1910, others up to 1923), Arts and Crafts and Modernism. Our periods are named/recognized by building trends, not monarch birth and death dates. We know when Victoria died along with scads of minutiae about her life, but also that while she gives her name to a building style that style didn’t end with her death.
@MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead

@@OurRestorationNation The differences between Victorian and Edwardian are pretty substantial, from clothing, to architectural design. @OurRestorationNation

Yes, there is a huge difference in Victorian and Edwardian clothing. In the clothing genre there is a distinction. However, in architecture there is not a scholarly distinction. It’s not an opinion: it’s what’s taught in graduate level Historic Preservation. We aren’t telling you that you and your specialty are wrong: merely that in the architectural realm “Edwardian” isn’t a recognized style in the US. It is in the UK, but in the US scholars do not recognize it. For a period to be delineated as unique for architecture the trends of building must change substantially. Perhaps what you are calling “Edwardian” is what scholars recognize as Beaux-Arts or even Neo-Classical revival. Both stretch from approximately 1893 to 1920 and the building styles and trends are vastly different. However, Victorian style architecture continued to be “on trend” and widely built until far after Queen Victoria’s death. There wasn’t a memo that went out worldwide when Victoria died that said “The Queen is dead. Stop building the following types of homes immediately “

Talk about saving a home! You've manage to not just save it but restore it to it's former glory to a period when craftsmanship was appreciated, and your decorating gives that nod of respect to the time period. Also that blue is one of my favorite colors for a home, so beautiful.

How much was it to do the foundation? The house we got an accepted offer on also has foundation issues similar to yours.

I cat remember exactly how much but it was substantial and took a long time. Fortunately that was 13 years ago. *edited by the wife who did the budget for the project. 13 years ago this was 15,000 in work. We did none of it ourselves at that time. Well worth it though!

Absolutely gorgeous! Love it! I hate when old homes become “tear downs”. I am all for saving these beautiful, vintage homes. Cause once they are gone, they are gone. Keep up the good work! 👍💕

Bravo👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I just love seeing homes brought back from the brink and especially love seeing homes decorated with second hand items. No new crap that breaks after 6 months of use and just ends up in the bin. Thank you. Much love from Australia xx

Absolutely love the attention to detail. I simply adore that you have showcased as artwork old and beautiful clothing. I completely agree they should be shown as the art they are rather than stored away.

I didn’t realize you had restored a 1909. My 1905 was in much better shape and had OG electric lights (with 2 light fixtures still extant). Love what you’ve done! Watching again.

This is absolutely awesome! I love everything you've done, and I do so admire your ability to "see beyond the dirt," taking on the restoration of a house that truly deserved to be saved. You have turned it into a charming home that perfectly reflects your personality. Kudos to you!

Lovely home! Thanks for sharing your private life with me! And your "Fur Babies"! My future husband and I are renovating his childhood home for our new home. So far we've expanded the back deck and enclosed a private hot tub retreat. Next...a second bathroom. Make over for the music room. As well as painting. Next we will build a new 5 var garage in the back on the 1.25 acres. The home is in Warren Ohio. Please come to our city and discover the history in northeast Ohio!

My husband and I purchased a 1900 Victorian house in the south, the interior renovation is very close to completion; however, the exterior (except roof repairs & windows) has not been touched as of yet. We were able to save the original stairs (they are beautiful), most floors, doors, baseboards and trims. We left the pocket doors inside the walls but can easily be retrieve by removing the trim we installed to cover the side openings. Now that I see yours I’m thinking about getting them back 😊. We are adding another bedroom with a full bathroom in the attic for my daughter because she loves that space, it’s big and has natural lighting. I love my over 4,000 sq. ft. Victorian home, these houses are a treasure. Trying not to bring too much inside but I truly enjoy my house, specially the high ceilings and wrap around porch!!! The purchase price was a steal.

I am currently restoring a Victorian home, does anyone know what color the exterior is? Is that wallpaper or hand decorating in the dinning room. What a restoration!

The Exterior color is Behr Perennial Blue (though I would suggest a different brand). The murals are from TheGoodiesWallpapers on etsy

Beautiful! i gained so many ideas! I've been admiring the mens vest framed. Honestly thought it was a childs christening gown or something. Periwinkle blue is my favorite and has been considered a neutral in my home for paint color. However, mine photographs purple often. I am going to an estate sale tomorrow to see the price of a antique travel trunk but it is curved top. I am second thinking because I love your use of stacking and using also as a coffee table. Your home is so relaxing and my favorite has to be your Master Suite. I imagine you made the cute , pink 1/2 moon pillow on the bed.

Well done you two! I have always lived in older homes and for the life of me don't understand why people aren't flocking to them. Yes they are a bit of work but what you get for the money is incredible, can't buy those ceiling heights anymore. Love your chandeliers, they are just right without overpowering. You wouldn't want to reveal your chandelier source would you? One last bit, I lived in Old Louisville for 5 years and those houses are amazing. The gentleman across the street had very similar stair banisters but his had never been painted. I think I like that you painted yours. It's light and airy but with definite interest.

OK. Let me start off by thanking you for letting us into your private sanctuary! I love your stained glass window on that back door. I also love your mural on the side of the stairs. I love the dining room and think that the chandelier is wonderfully beautiful. I also really think the kitchen is beautiful. I like how your blue color has more of a lavender tone to it instead of a grey tone. Thanks for opening your home up to People's critiques. I do appreciate it! I forgot about the spindle work on your stairs! I don't know how, because it is perfection!

I love your house. It’s absolutely beautiful. I don’t think I am inspired after watching. I just feel tired after watching. We have an old house that we are working on and it’s been many years in the making. It’s a small house and we do all the work ourselves. I am soooo sick of working on a house. I want my life back.

Had to give a shout out to that square window featured in the attic of the house at the beginning - I think it has a ribbon - they don't make them like that anymore. Today we'll build a house but do you get pocket doors, floor-to-ceiling cabinets in your kitchen or a Butler's Pantry? No. But that's what I call a dream home.
