Yes, but in fairness Zank. Please take care to remind people of your point (which I find to be a good one) that is likely overlook because each geographical region has its own climate challenges and even its own soil needs. The matter of keeping houseplants is rather unnatural, too. For it is us, humans, who bring them into our inorganic spaces. Again, great point but it also could have its nuances if someone offers broad recommendations that are not applicable to a specific region. The backlash can be brutal. Therein may lye the reluctance of some who do not acknowledge our interest from a global perspective.

@davidjduerr

@@sab_8321 seemed pretty straight forward to me, gentler means less potent if you need an example think of alcohol, hard liquor is much stronger where as a beer is going to be “gentler”. If you’re drinking hard liquor you’ll need less to feel intoxicated than you would if you were drinking beer. If you need an explanation as to why it comes down to ingredients and amount of ingredients. More is stronger, less is gentler.

I think if you're removing a lot of the soil, I would still wait at least a couple weeks. If you're transplanting it, I would actually suggest more of a soil activator or something like biotone to help with the shock of transplant.

Hello and thank you for the v detailed walkthrough on fertilizing. I have a few questions and was wondering if you have any experience with the below: 1) usage used tea leaves or water soaked in used tea leaves (I presume these are considered amendments as well) - are they also “surefire” ways to get bugs as you mentioned? Because I’m also aware of tea being a good repellent for certain bugs. 2) watering plants with water used to wash rice - some people in the East/Asia use that as an amendment that provide a natural boost as well. Wondering if you have experience that this also affects bug presence I guess the general question would be plant based vs animal source amendments - any pros and cons? Thank you!! Bel

Denise Miliano since fish fertilizer is organic, there is no harm if you over fertilize your plants. I diluted my fertilizer at half the dosage and use it every 2-4 weeks on my plants. Perhaps you should try fertilizing your plant at half the dosage and observe how your plant is doing. If it is doing fine, you can continue using it once a month during growing season. Since i live in the tropic, its all year around for me. Hope this helps 😁

Summer thanks for another great video, one thing I don't agree with though is using raw eggshells in your soil. I know we all like to be and want to be more sustainable, and think using eggshells is a great and easy feel-good way of doing that. Unfortunately, the calcium in eggshells is not readily bioavailable without some extra steps. As Kevin at Epic Gardening aptly mentions, it's a myth (kzitem.info/news/bejne/lKOjmaqej6GBm3o). Unless you ground the eggshells up very finely and then blast them in the oven, they won't do much for your plants. Use them in compost and use other sources for calcium in plants

Cara mri, she was saying that the really low numbered fertilizers (in the single digits) are organic and safe, so you can’t hurt your plants by adding more if you choose. The higher numbers like 15, 20, and 30’s are synthetic fertilizers made in a lab, and those are harsh, so you need to reduce the recommended dosage by HALF of what the instructions say - otherwise you can burn and damage your plant.

Nice video, curious if one did uses to much fertilizer can you undo the damage/burn or is it sometimes the plant is doomed for death at that point? And when should you uses soil amendments vs fertilizer.
@mulliganstew72
4 жыл бұрын
nate fidalgo From what I understand you should water the plants before applying liquid fertilizer to avoid the burn as well as dilute the fertilizer… Soil amendments are different and can be added every month or two topping off the soil (with worm castings) or during a repotting session or while potting a new plant. Amendments do not contain traditional nutrients they contain microbial‘s that help nutrients absorb, airatuon for soil, disease prevention, etc. but are not necessarily as nutrient rich as a fertiliser... in my understanding. (I’m new to this & have been studying :) )
@natefidalgo7625
4 жыл бұрын
@@mulliganstew72 Thanks for the reply i notice over time i had eventually figured it out. Amendments dont have to be fertilizer but can be low dose ones. But there is no guarantee on it NPK values like the fertilizers are. But what amendments are good for is like peat moss , coco cori ,vermiculate , perlite ,..etc are great for moisture retaining , some disease prevention. Or even if your going hydroponically away to go with soiless /no dirt growing medium to hold the root system in the net baskets...etc.

Nitrogen is for promoting growing in alot of ways one type is blood meal, P phosphorus is for the blooming of the flowers a high P is like bone meal. And greensand is for the potassium for developing root systems with the Nitrogen rich fertilizer. I do agree synthetic allows you to uses more or buy less fertilizer then organic fertilizers that are not as concentrated. But realizing this you got to be careful with the dilution of fertilizers from what i gather.

My plants arent doing well, Thought I could help them with fertilizing, but I always thought not to feed in winter. In now confused..😩. It will be great to have your opinion. Thank you

I think fertilizing a plant that's going dormant is like microwaving your baby because the kid's got a cold and is sleepy. Not an expert though. of plants or kids

If you have definitive seasons, and it's a non-growing season for your plants, and you're not "tricking them" by giving them grow lights, then I would definitely wait on fertilizing until a growing season is upon you.

This is probably one of the best videos I have seen on plants. I loved the time lapse of the roots growth. I am obsessed to look at my orchids roots. I wish I could see inside the other pots too.

Superb point near the beginning, that most people don't get: ➽ LIGHT -- *not* fertilizer/nutrients! -- is the key "food input", i.e. that makes a plant grow bigger! (People think "I'll put more fertilizer on and the plant will get bigger / grow more flowers / faster" -- WRONG.) Remember, plants' magic is in PHOTOSYNTHESIS, which literally means "build-stuff-using-LIGHT". [Mostly plants build their mass from AIR (carbon + oxygen) and WATER (hydrogen and oxygen) - and the energy from light , which lets a few crafty "assembler molecules" (enzymes) rip apart and shove those Cs and Os and Hs around into SUGAR, and other useful stuff.] Never mind how it WORKS, though; the point is this: FERTILIZER is NOT the stuff that "fattens up" a plant; it isn't "food", the way you think it is (that's why adding more fertilizer will NOT help make a plant grow faster, and will actually hurt) ----- but you know what is? LIGHT. (Fertilizer is -- KIND of -- more like taking your vitamins and making sure you don't have a deficiency, although maybe way more so -- too crude a comparison to go into right now, especially the difference between NPK + Ca/S (macronutrients) vs. the micronutrients (copper, boron, manganese, magnesium, selenium, etc. etc.)

Thank you very much for speaking to all of us, I live in Angola 🇦🇴 and sometimes I can’t relay on the explanation on the back of a packet of seeds or a bottle of fertilizer because it says summer or spring and it’s very different. But you talk for all of us. Thanks

Something I am confused about: you said you fertilize WHILE you water, and that if you don't water first it may potentially burn the plants. However you mixed the fertilizer with water and went straight into the plants, so is that considered 'fertilizing while watering?' I think i interpreted that as watering thoroughly first, and then doing another pour of the fertilizer.

Same. That's originally why I looked for a video about it and after over a half hour I'm still confused. 😳

She is just saying that when it is time for you to water your plant, mix the fertilizer with the water, then go ahead and water with the water you just added the fertilizer to. If you just toss undiluted fertilizer on a plant with dry soil, it will burn the plant up. So water with the fertilizer you just added to your water.

How often do I fertilize my plants? Is liquid plant food not fertilizer. I just bought a liquid plant food, does that mean I have to buy fertilizer and combine them?

When a website says to use a "balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength" does that mean half strength if I'm using 20-20-20, or 10-10-10 or 2-2-2. Should all these balanced organic fertilizers be diluted to half strength? Thank you so much.

Thanks for this. I’ve been wondering for a while whether our winter’s here in Adelaide, Australia would be considered a dormant season but I know we are considered subtropical!

If you notice your plants slowing down during your cold season, then I would take cue from your plants and slow down or eliminate fertilizing. If you're on the equator, well then, that's another subject altogether. Remember there are microclimates in lots of places too!

Summer Rayne Oakes I think for us - and this is only from looking at things the last few years - winter is a growing period while summer everything stands still. We have hot dry summers here so nothing really grows; everything is just trying to survive. You’re right, though - you always need to monitor your plants to see how they perform where you live.

Wow! 😃 That was so helpful. Thanks for explaining fertilizers in a way that makes sense. 🤔 I'm always leery to fertilize. It's hard to fathom that adding just one cap full to a large lake is plenty. Lol 😁 I'm glad that I stumbled🍀upon your video and am now a subscriber.🌻

Hi Summer, thank you so much for this wonderful video! I grow orchids and as you may know they require a lot of especial care. I am currently using an 3-1-5 organic fertiliser. I am a little concerned about the media breaking down faster by using an organic fertiliser, but my husband is really terrified of chemicals and for that reason he doesn't like synthesised fertilisers. Any advice or insights? Love your content so much!

Anyway i enjoy watching some of your videos very knowledgeable you leave not much gaps in logic and are really good presenting the information. One last question i am wondering about wouldn't it be cheaper if they just made fertilizers in powder form. With the NPK value adding up exactly to 100 so there is no filler water or other unnecessary stuff when buying fertilizer? I mean sure it makes the customer have to know how to measure out / dilute the fertilizer properly into the right concentration but you get so much more fertilizer and really not have to buy fertilizer very often. Like with acres of land you wouldn't want small spray bottles or gallon containers of fertilizer you want it in powder form huge bags that you dilute to spray over the whole acres /farm land. Similar for pesticide/fungicides /insecticides if your having issues in your field you want huge bags and dilute it yourself. Example 10-10-10 means 10% nitrogen , 10% Phosphorus , 10% potassium with 70% filler so 70% is just diluted water stuff you dont really need. The synthetic fertilzers at least you got higher N P K values in the same ratios but more concentrate but still not the best for large projects. 20-20-20 synthetic is the same as 10-10-10 organic but still you have 40% filler to 70% filler why have filler?

It's really about whether you want to build up soil microorganisms or not. Sure there can be other differentiations too but haven't seen anything in the literature myself

Within reason you can use one type of fertilizer for everything if you adjust the amount of fertilizer to water. For example if I have 10-10-10 fertilizer for a teaspoon I can make that function as 5-5-5 by cutting the amount of fertilizer I add to the water.

Near the beginning you said the numbers refer to 'percentage' of the nutrition values. You used percentage interchangeably with ratio. They are two completely different things. Per cent means "out of 100". A ratio is a ratio. Leaves me with the question, what's the difference between 10:10:10 and 20:20:20? Couldn't these all be simplified to 1:1:1? This video is essentially holding up different boxes and reading out numbers. This is a very rambling video that's light on information

I’m wondering if an organic fertilizer will stink up my apartment? I have a lot of plants in a fairly small place and I’m afraid that if I fertilize all of them organically it will start to smell bad. Thanks for all the great info, I love to watch all your videos!

I wish I had seen this video a few months earlier, would have dispelled so much anxiety towards fertilizers and would have solved much of the confusion. I currently have a mix of organic and mineral/syntheic fertilizers, once I use them all up, I will know what kind of fertilizer to get going forward. I suppose it's a good chance too see how well my plants respond to the different types of fertilizers as well

Also I have a GIANT peace lily that is now looking like I have 2 new blooms coming although I’m in Canada & it’s the winter season now Should I fertilize a bit with the orchid fertilizer or wait till the spring? Yes.. I bought it like 4 m ago & it does have those green balls of fertilizer in the soil ...
