Sadly, for my plants I have been home recuperating since MARCH!! I love to water them. I noticed that if You pick the plant up out of the pot cover pot and it light it needs watering. If it’s heavy it doesn’t. There’s also a watering probe but that’s inexpensive but not as accurate, in my opinion. Also let the plant dry out, BUT when You see the leaves hanging, give it water. But then You can indulge in Your Water Fetish and really make it wet. But let the excess water run out. Also I have learned to go outside more often. Go to a Beer Garten, or do something outside to take my mind off of my Babies. But one thing Homeboy didn’t do and it’s very important when using Terracotta pots is to soak them in a pail of water until the air bubbles disappear. This enables the pot to hold in the moisture, closes the pores/air holes (see I know Some of y’all thought , “Pores? Clay doesn’t have pores. Skin does”) in the clay and ensures that the plant is being watered not the pot. Also when repotting always use a piece of broken pot or plastic to cover but not stuff the draining hole. This enables the excess water to drain and the roots won’t get root rot or the plant won’t be sitting in water. Too much Love is NEVER good. Something will always be hurt or die, be it Plant or Human. And just a tip for the Single Folks here. If You’re invited to a Dates place first look around and check out the cleanliness, but most importantly, if that Cat or Chic doesn’t have any plants, that’s a BAD sign, and if the plants are all dry out and sad looking, that’s how You’ll going to be looking. Because these are living Creatures that need to be cared for. And if that Person doesn’t have that ability? To each Their own but I have followed this guideline and although Single, I am Happily Single out of choice. Just a tip. Thanks for the video. Very informative as usual.

I also have a dracaena marginata, and mine periodically needs to have the lower leaves removed because they go yellow/brown. I have found that this is usually not indicative of a problem as long as it’s just the lower leaves. It’s just the natural leaf cycle, and this is how they eventually get tall, bare stems that will make them a lovely tree shape. Your browning did not look that extensive, so I think you probably would have been fine with no repotting, especially since the root system didn’t look overcrowded. Another common issue with dracaena is green leaves turning brown only on at the tips. This can be caused by fluoride or chlorine in tap water, and can be prevented by switching to distilled or rain water. (I didn’t see any of that here, just mentioning it for other troubleshooters).

His wasn't in good shape, and would benefit in a larger pot, but it wasn't quite root bound, just very dry. I have also run into the issue with even mildly hard water browning the leaf tips. Found that if I leave my watering spray bottle open for 24-48 hours, it does better than directly watering from tap. I solved the first real bad issues I had by collecting rain water for a few weeks of waterings, and it can withstand water right from the tap occasionally now. Great plants though. Not too difficult once you get the hang of it.

My dracena was going good until I repotted it in the potting mix with perlite. It all went droopy in a couple of months. Local garden center told me that Dracena is lime hating plant and perlite will eventually kill it. I had to soak the plant's rootball in water for several hours before I managed to remove all traces of perlite from its root system. It's back to life again. So how come you recommend perlite for dracena care?

U keep talking about that dracenea being in such bad shape, but it’s not at ALL! I wouldn’t even be REMOTELY worried, just a little guilty feeling that I let it get like that, and can honestly say there’s no WAY that couldn’t be turned around, very easily and very quickly! At that moment that plant is still in relatively GOOD shape. Unless there’s something invisible like u mentioned, as in lack of nutrients, which is rarely gonna be the reason someone’s plant looks like that. all u need to do is water it(I haven’t watched the video yet, I stopped at 1:22)! U can even leave the bad leaves on, and it’ll make a complete perfect comeback, VERY quickly! It’ll just look way better if u remove the bad leaves, but all u NEED to do to make that plant fully healthy is water it well(and continue watering it). Im VERY saddened by the thought that someone like you would even CONSIDER giving up on a plant anywhere NEAR as good as that one still is! Only give up on a plant when the roots have desiccated, or rotted away, and ur sure it’s actually dead!

This plant likes humidity but hates soggy earth, that's why some light soil and the expanded clay works perfect. Also to spray once a week some water on the leaves will help not getting the endings dry. And no direct sun, this is a tropical plants and are never to be found in open spaces, they like big trees protecting them from the direct sun, but good light is needed.

Allow the soil to dry out for a few days, so that the top 2 inches (5 centimeters) are really dry. The larvae of fungus gnats cannot survive in dry soil. However, they will remain dormant and begin their development once the soil is moist again. Water your plant with a mixture of one part hydrogen peroxide and four parts water. The solution will kill the larvae, but is harmless to your plant. Reapply the hydrogen peroxide solution once a week until you see that the fungus gnats are gone.

@zorrokitty796
6 жыл бұрын
Trunk is mushy?? Remove the plant from the soil and trim any mushy, black (dead) roots ASAP. Ponytail does not like wet feet. Water every 2 weeks on average, probably less in the winter. Ponytail likes a well draining soil. I use a cactus mix. But even some cactus mixes could stand to have a bit of extra perlite. Make sure you have good drainage holes. Use a terra cotta pot if you tend to overwater. One thing I am unsure is of whether or not to apply rooting hormone to the roots that you trim. Then put plant back in dry soil and hold off on watering for about a week. Then water thoroughly. Best of luck! So sad to see a plant struggle...Oh and my ponytail is doing better on one side. The roots on the thriving side are already coming out of the bottom of the pot after replanting only 6 weeks later. I am hoping the other side will catch up. I rotate the plant so I do not think it has to do with light.

If your leaves are dropping off and the tip of the plant seems dead, you can cut it back to a height you want it to start over in the live part of the stem. Any good remainder of the cutting can be cut at an angle and reinserted back into the soil.
@devilishshinigami2056

Overwatering is nr. 1 plantkiller. Neglecting is second. BTW: If you use these kind of pots you always have to water them more because these pots absorb water and because of this the soil dries faster than in a ceramic or plastic pot. The pot he used before was already a bit too big. You can see that with the roots. If the roots are so close to the potwalls and come out of the bottom hole, they definitely need a bigger one. If plants have a too big pot they grow a buuunch of roots but ontop won't happen a lot because of that. And make sure to use a drainage material- as example stones. Place approximately 1-3cm high stones on the bottom of the pot so the excess water can drain from it more easily there. Because if the water can't drain the roots begin to rot and the plant eventually dies. So always check the soil. :)

Hadas Goshen take it out of the pot, cut off the dead growth and trim the roots. Then get another pot with fresh dirt. What I didn’t see from this video is that when you use a terracotta/clay pot you have to sit it in water for about an hour, so that the pot/ clay soaks up water. You’ll see bubbles coming from the pot as an indication that the pot is soaking up water. If not every time you water the plant the moisture goes into the pot not the plant. Another thing to remember when repotting is to put a broken piece of pot, or something to cover the watering hole in the bottom of the pot. The hole should allow the excess water to flow out of the pot, but should be big enough that the excess water drains slowly. This enables the dirt/plant to soak up water and stay nourished. After replacing the dirt don’t water the plant for a few days and leave the plant out of the Sun, but ensure that it’s getting light.After 2-3 days soak the plant allowing water to run out of watering hole. Do this a few times to insure the plant has taken in enough water. A tip to find out if the plant needs watering is to lift the plant up without the over pot? I just pick the plant up out of the cover pot and see how heavy it is. If the plant is heavy it needs no water, but if it’s light, then water it thoroughly and it should be good for a week or 5 days, depending on where it’s sitting, outside because of the sun more often, or in winter every 8-10 days. I also used to drown my plants until I started watching how the leaves hanged. It’s better to water 1x thoroughly than 3x short. As long as the stem/trunk isn’t completely rotten you can still save it. Also the live part can simply be cut off and placed in a glass of water. After 2-3 weeks roots will show and you can give it another try. Remember to cut the living growth long enough for potting. Try it out. It’s always better to buy a young plant instead of an older one because the younger ones are cheaper, they can take the changes/ more abuse easier, and because they’re looking for LOVE, they’ll try to accommodate your faults or inexperience. Besides when it’s smaller you get a feeling of achievement when it starts growing. But also on another tip is, most plants that are on their last limbs, will shoot out a Baby, trying to preserve the next generation. Like the banana plant. So you could take that cutting an propagate a whole new plant. Don’t give up and when all else fails, take your plant to swimming class.

How much water is appropriate for a plant this size?
@nicandrews1370

My plant is dying 😭 and it had a mealybug infestation. I changed the soil, cleaned the plant's leaves with dish soap and peppermint oil, and the leaves all just dropped and started to fall off. I am devastated. I really want to save mynplant because there is new growth. I just dont know what to do because cleaning the plants leaves and caring for the leaves makes it worse! You can see all the little bite marks on the dead leaves where the bugs were.

should that clay pot first be soaked in water, so that once plant / soil are added the dry pot doesn't pull moisture from the soil?

I have chilli seedlings. Sprayed them with insecticide yesterday and repotted them. Now they dying. Might it have something to do with me using an old stainless steel cleaner bottle for the insecticide spray? I did clean it out before using it but maybe its chemical residue? They were very healthy before that.

Wonderful dracaena, despite not doing well. I love a squat dracaena. :D For a dracaena (is that a d. marginata?) I wonder if it might also help to remove all the limp leaves on the lower portions of the trunk and branches? Especially the yellowed leaves? My understanding is that dracaena leaves go limp even on healthy plants awhile before they start to shed anyway, so would removing the leaves allow the plant to put more nutrients toward its trunk and roots rather than trying to upkeep all those leaves? Although I guess it also needs to process as much light as possible to get that sweet sweet glucose so maybe it depends on the plant. Also, something I do with my house plants is use a single chopstick to geeeently poke at and tap at the root ball, to remove all the soil attached to the root ball for repotting. I do not think it is super necessary (unless there is root rot) but when a plant is going down a dark path I worry that the soil might have some fungus or something in and try to start as fresh as possible.

Hey! I know that guy! Looking for some guidance on a sad inherited dracaena that was left at the office during COVID times and stumbled across this video and now I’m starstruck. BRB sad plant, gotta go look up Kevin in our first grade yearbook. Haha!
@helenperalta3555

Okay Kevin. So I get this vid is three years old. But I came across it because I have this Ravenea that looks way worse than your dracaena did at the time of this video. Anyway my peeve - or inquiry - is why in the heck do garden centers sell plants that are inevitably not going to thrive in the zone in which they’re selling the plant. And why on earth would they sell a non-native plant? It’s annoying to a new gardener like myself who just doesn’t know any better. I’m a tad wiser now. Thanks to gardeners like yourself I follow. But it’s something not often talked about even in the gardening world. I mean that Ravenea looked so gorgeous at the garden center. I don’t think I can revive mine (zone 8a).

I'm wondering the same thing because I really don't have the money to buy new soil at the moment so I'm hoping to amend the bag in have.. it is pretty dry and old though so I may have to break down and buy a bag of fresh potting soil from Walmart or Lowe's. I just rooted a bunch of golden pothos cuttings and I really want them to have the BEST start possible. 💚🌿🤗

Perlite is cheap in big bags, it works well with old soil because it keeps its structure (doesn't decompose) and it's drainage properties reduce the risk of gnats and fungal issues.

@DarkHelixia

If the plant is 'dying' or stressed, repotting it is likely the last thing it needs ... It's like moving house when you have a broken leg ... In the case of the video, the plant was healthy, just had some dead old leaves (which came off easily) ...

Stop mixing soil by hand in a bucket! Just just your soil into a trash bag and mix it in there. No dust will come up and your soil will be evenly mixed. A much easier way
