My den and living room have north facing windows as well. They are tall windows, but our oak trees block a lot of sunlight. My zz and pothos are sitting on plant stands and are holding their own. They grow super slow, but they’re still alive. lol

I have north windows and grow all sorts of things. I just am lucky enough to have wider window sills so all plants are grown right against the windows and they thrive! I can even grow some succulents without them stretching out! Now if I tried to place anything not in the window sills they die a slow death but my window sills look like a jungle with a wide variety of plants in them.

From my experience with ZZ plant, I don't think it's really a low light plant. It just store lots of energy in its rhizome and react to low-light condition very slowly. Mine was putting out healthy new leaves at first, then after three or four months, his new leaves got thin and leggy, difficult to stand. Then after another a few months, he stopped putting out new leaves completely. I relocated his pot to a sunny west-facing window sill and it took 2 months for him to recover. Btw, very healthy zz plants have these stunning, almost patent leather like, very shinny thick leaves. The leaves on your zz plant didn't shine like they could.

I find just picking up the pot (as long as it's not huge) is really helpful. I use a really chunky mix for my aroids that's really difficult to get my finger into. 🚫👇🏽 You can use a moisture meter as well, but people have mixed opinions about their efficacy. Some say they don't work, some swear by them. That said, if you do choose to use one, get the two-prong vs single-prong type. I just don't love the idea of torturing roots every time I use one, because you're supposed to test more than one spot per plant pot for accuracy. That said, I suppose it helps with aeration? Apologies for the most indecisive response on moisture meters ever! 🤣 This is why I just pick up the pot. I can't handle all that drama. 😂

Q&A! What's the secret to spider plants? Everyone tells me they're easy, and I love them, but mine always die. I've tried every combination of things.

You and Drew of Lone Fox need to collab. I dunno how or in what form, but the two of you in a collab would be hella cool.

Thanks for this. I have a large attic room with one east-facing window, so I like the plants that don’t need much sun. So far I’ve got an Aglaonema, Ivy, Fern, and Pothos back there.

Some succulents can adapt to very low light conditions. Specially stuff like the aloe Vera. Seriously, that plant thrives in places where other "low light" plants die out

Q&A questions… How is you pottery coming along? Do you prefer to do a nursery pot and cache pot or a pot with drainage and a saucer?

Q&A: Firstly thanks for another great video. The back of my house is North facing and since the pandemic my dining room has been my office. I’ve really wanted to green it up but anything not right next to the window can struggle. I appreciate the tips of some other plants to consider. My question is where do you see yourself in the next few years. You have quit your job at the house plant store and have a really successful KZitem channel. What next? Summer Rayne’s Homestead Brooklyn has expanded to online tutorials, books etc. Do you see this is something you would be interested in? Do you think you have dreams of opening a physical plant store in the future or would you do an online store, as that has been an increasingly popular market place and doesn’t have the overheads of a physical store. I’d be really interested to see where you plan to be in the next few years. I appreciate your weekly content and it’s always informative and entertaining. Have a great day.
