This was some amazing piece of history here as I'm glad you left the commercials in giving us the big time machine experience as I saw a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air promo in there for the series premiere the following night. Jerry Glanville's first game as the Falcons coach against his old team in the new bad boys in black image era.

I was at this game. It was nearly 100 degrees, the stadium sold out and a great buzz surrounding the Falcons. They had gone 4-0 in preseason as well. Glanville lit a fire under the team and fan base. They ended up losing several close games in 1990. Could have easily been 10-6 or 11-5. Actually a great job of coaching by Glanville considering how downright awful they were the season before under Marion Campbell. Atlanta beat playoff teams Houston, Cincinnati and New Orleans in 1990 and kept Dallas from going.

dallas' backup qb Babe Laufenberg kept the cowboys from going to the playoffs, not the falcons. earlier that season the cowboys traded Steve Walsh to the Saints, leaving the inglorious Babe as Dallas' only backup qb. When Aikman got hurt in week 15, Dallas was done.

Jerry Glanville got his hands on three of his former Oilers to play for the 1990 Falcons. The Oilers had no use for special teamer/fullback Tracy Johnson (1989 with Houston) in Jack Pardee and Kevin Gilbride's version of the Run and Shoot (no tight ends or fullbacks) for 1990, so Glanville picked him up on waivers. LB Robert Lyles (1984-1990 in Houston) was an unsung stud for the Oilers in his time there, but by 1990 the Oilers were looking at making John Grimsley and Johnny Meads a bookend full-time duo at outside linebacker for years to come, so Lyles was the odd man out. Grimsley beat Lyles out, so he wanted out of Houston, and he got his wish during the '90 season. Not too long after he got released by Houston, Glanville and company claimed him and he was playing for the ATL by Week 7. And then of course Mike Rozier. He held out for much of the Oilers 1989 training camp and wasn't activated until Week 2 of that season. He had a shitty 1989 season for someone of his caliber (301 yards and 2 scores rushing) and that year he had to share carries with Lorenzo White, Allen Pinkett, and Alonzo Highsmith. Then in 1990 Highsmith was gone and he STILL had to fight for carries with Pinkett, White, and some new guy named Victor Jones. Moreover in '90, Jack Pardee and Gilbride wanted to pass the ball all over the Astrodome and elsewhere (as they should have with talent like Warren Moon, Drew Hill, Ernest Givins, and others) and Rozier was rationed to 10 measly carries. Man, Rozier was never the same after 1988 in terms of production. Rozier's body was wearing down by 1990 (heavy usage in the USFL and from 1985 to 1988 in the NFL with Houston) and nobody in the NFL (including the Falcons) was checking for him as far as giving him more than 100 carries, starting for them, or at least being a number two back that's why he retired after the 1991 season.

This 47-27 Falcons ass-whipping of the Oilers was Jerry Glanville's FU to Oilers fans, the Houston media, and Oilers GM Mike Holovak. Those three entities gave Glanville a lot of shit when he was the Oilers head coach from 1985 to 1989: fans (especially in the 1988 and 1989 period), Holovak (from about 1987 to 1989), and the media (just about all five years he coached Houston, they dogged him).
