My station (28) was first in on this fire. We had been talking for years saying this would happen someday. It did. Pretty much anytime we had a fire there other than a dumpster fire or car fire, it was always a multiple alarm fire. I seem to remember 835 apartments and nearly 600 of those were destroyed - burnt all the way down to the foundation. Not even the plumbing pipes were sticking up. A friends wife and I took Gatorade to 28's engine at about 1 AM after they had been on-scene for hours. The cause was a torch used to repair an air conditioner. Repairman was reported to be an ex-convict who was afraid he would be charged if he reported it. So he just left and told no one about the accidental origin of the fire. If he had reported it, it could have been kept to a building or two.

The state makes an offender on probation or an exconvict has a parking ticket they will go to prison.

I lived there when i was a kid, Johnny Nash lived there and spent a lot of time at the pool. The pool was huge and had the high dive platform.

Was the apartment complex ever rebuilt after the fire?

Yes, it was rebuilt in 1992 by Hanover. It's still called Woodway Square. A portion of it is now another apartment complex called The Hayworth built in 2017.

I remember the Ranchester Apt fire off of Bellaire and Gessner. It pretty much took most of them out.
