The main advantages of the 'boxer' engine are in reciprocal, dynamic, and "couple" balance. To control oil consumption the correct type of oil control rings must be fitted.

It is a good question. This animation is motorcycle engine used by BMW since 1921. It is used in bikes like the R90S and R100.

The difference is how the piston rods are connceted to the crankshaft and how the opposite pistons are moving. Boxer: corresponding pistons are always together at top dead center, therefore also the rod bearings at the crankshaft are also opposite. V180°: at the coresponding pistons one is in the top end center where the other is at the bottom end center. Usually the pistins rods are on the same pivot without separation on the crankshaft.

Ich hatte als junger Kerl einen Citroen GSA mit luftgekühlten 4 Zylinderboxer . Das Auto , wie auch das Lauf -und Drehverhalten dieses Motors war einfach traumhaft . Den konnte man problemlos auch mal über 7500 hochdrehen lassen .Das konnte der echt ab , ohne Schaden zu nehmen und er klang dabei nicht angestrengt , sondern fast wie eine Turbine . Mann , was habe ich dieses Auto geliebt . Schade , das esheute sowas nicht mehr gibt .

@testdirver Subarus are Water cooled VWs are air cooled. Also the Subaru uses cams in the head while the VW used push rods.

Hi, technically you are correct. One time the piston rings would have to be changed BUT that would be after a long time which the rest of the engine is not built for. But the demaged part are the piston rings - not the piston themselves, its quite cheap part because they can get demaged othervise.

@testdirver Very little, fundamentally. They are basically the same. The major differences are cooling, valve drive mechanics, and maybe ignition mechanics (how the spark is delivered to the spark plugs). Another minor issue would be how it's mounted in the vehicle. VW hung the engine off the transmission where as Subaru had it supported via it's own mounts.

@testdirver nope it is a inline 4 it is 7.6L diesel it is in an old gmc that used to be a tractor (semi) but we converted it to a pickup it is i think a c6500 or c7500 not sure though

the suby is liquid cooled and the vws are air cooled.....some vw bus engines made from 1983 onward are liquid cooled also....both makes are of a boxer design....some people convert vw busses to suby power.

+dekoldrick There are two main forces: the firing of the stroke and the pushing from the connection rod. These two are all in line with the cylinder, thus not creating any sideways force that would tear up the walls.

+Dan Donneley if you look at a new model subaru boxer engine conrod you will see it is slanted on one side towards the side of the piston that is on top. this helps counteract gravity a bit but it also fighta some of the forces from the crank itself that are trying to shove the piaton into the cylinder wall.

With both pistons moving into the cylinders at the same time, doesn't this causeexcessive crankcase breathing , and the loss of motor oil through vapor .Problem solved with 4 cylinders.

to be technical, a boxer is more efficient than a v format, the reason being that the effects of gravity does not affect the movement of the pistons.

Could someone please explain the advantages and disadvantages of a 3-cylinder Boxer engine over 2-cylinder and 4-cylinder Boxer engines or even an inline-3 engine? Always wondered why a Boxer / Flat-3 engine never powered any cars or motorcycles? Aside from Dante Giacosa developing a 3-cylinder engine in both vertical and horizontal forms as part of the 1960s stillborn Fiat 123 project.

+wickiezulu Honda's Goldwing and Valkyrie bikes use a 6 cylinder boxer engine. The earlier Goldwings used a 4 cylinder boxer.

Boxer, definetly boxer, a 180 V has one piston at top while the opposite as at bottom, because they share the same crankjournal, something impossible with a boxer.. Check the flat 12 video.

@@mekanizmalar Good question. A device called ignition points closing and opening is what causes the coils to provide a high voltage spark at the spark plugs. A "points cam" at the front end of the engine has two lobes opposite each other because it needs to open the points and fire each time the cylinder under compression reaches top dead center. The problem is one cylinder will be under compression, but the other will be tdc of its exhaust stroke (as you have shown). Instead of complicating the design significantly in order to have two sets of points for firing plugs individually only when the side is at tdc, it's simpler and less expensive to just fire both plugs at once. Part of what makes it the simpler choice is that in a 4 stroke engine the camshaft only rotates once for every two rotations of the crankshaft. And since the points cam is in sync with the camshaft, you have to put two lobes on it so it's firing a spark each time the crankshaft has made a rotation...because one of the cylinders will be at compression tdc and so needs a spark. Firing the plug at tdc on the exhausting cylinder doesn't hurt anything and does very little to reduce the life of the plug because there was no fuel/air mixture under compression.
