DENJIRO: I'm sure we all love cotton candy. It's tasty, isn't it? But do you know how they're made? Let's take a closer look inside a cotton candy machine. First, we put sugar inside this canister in the middle. If we take off this cover… we see that there's a motor inside that makes the canister spin. There are carbon brushes under the canister, which send electricity to the canister's heater to heat it up. There are grooves in the canister's lid. The sugar that's placed inside gets melted by the heat, and when the canister starts spinning, the liquified sugar flies out as thin threads. When it cools upon contact with air, it solidifies into cotton candy.
So how does the sugar fly out in threads? Let's conduct an experiment. I'm going to soak a brush with ink and attach it to a disc that spins. Let me spin the disc with a drill. We see that the ink is flying out in a tangential direction in relation to the spinning disc. The candy was flying out in the same fashion.
Look at what I've made. It's a homemade cotton candy maker! This container here has lots of holes on the bottom. I'm going to heat up the container with a burner. Now watch.
ON-SCREEN TEXT: Do not try this at home.
DENJIRO: If you melt sugar and spin it right away, you can hand-spin cotton candy like this. Get the candy!
