Gotta love the wild stories that don't seem possible. Had a buddy in college who did several tours in the middle east. He had a story about a truck going missing and them being sent out to search for it. They found the truck in the middle of an open field, next to a random tree with nobody around. It obviously seemed super sketchy and nobody wanted to approach it. Whole they were departing what to do, one of the guys from the local forces with them decided to deal with it himself. He pulled a launcher from the back of the truck, stepped up next to the guys talking it over and fired. The rocket shot down range, missed the truck entirly, hit the ground next to the tree, blew up, the hidden suicide bomber in the branches of the tree lost his grip, fell put of the tree into the back of the truck, and his bomb went off destroying the whole thing and setting the tree on fire.

I heard about this from my grandfather who was building. Aircraft carriers in the brooklyn navy yard. His take on it was that we needed to do some serious work on our torpedos and became a strong proponent of reducing the diameter of the accidental detonation safety bar and improving the guidance systems. He was unable to fill a safe connecting. People that could do that work for the guiding system. But he wrote Congress every other week. About both issues, it took the yellow fin. Dropping a torpedo from 55 feet. Next to I forget the name of the senator demonstrating the failure of the detonators and yes, it was a fully live toward beetle, the captain of the boat. The chief of the boat and the senior chief for the torpedos was standing next to the senator explaining the problem. When they remove the detonator from the live torpedo and opened up the compartment that carried the explosives to show that it was a real torpedo. He lohe authorized the changing of the diameter for the accidental detonation safety bar. When he got back to congress right after he realized what happened he went and cleaned his shorts.

Yes we had problems with our torpedoes. I worked for an old guy who worked at Bremerton WA at the navy yard getting the torpedoes to go straight. He told some stories. The crew of the USS Barb, SS-220, destroyed a train. Instead of using a torpedo, a shore party planted a 55-pound demolition charge against a rail line on Karafuto, Japan, in late July 1945. As the shore party retreated to their boats, a train hit the demo charge. The train was derailed and sent flying 200-feet into the air and came crashing down, resulting in the desuctrion of twelve freight and two passenger and one mail car plus the engine.
