This accident happened on the Rotterdam Metro system, in the city of Spijkenisse. This specific metro line is known as the “tail track”...
The creator of the sculpture, Maarten Struijs was very surprised that the plastic tail was still intact after the incident. The design and final creation of the two tails at the end of the metro line was partly attributed to local residents that had asked the architect for real whale tail sculptures after seeing a first possible design. Maarten Stuijs has always been an advocator of architecture that can be used in various unintended ways. Ironically enough, his architecture has become a radical example of this. According to RET, the main public transport operator in Rotterdam, it should not have been possible for the Metro to crash through the emergency safety bumpers of the track. They also stated that the automatic detection system should’ve stopped the metro in case of an emergency, but this also did not happen.
