The 20th century was marked by movements, revolts and events. On the African continent it was the time of independence, which went hand in hand with the Cold War, when the Soviet Union and the United States polarized the world and, in the African context, were decisive with their positions - for different reasons - against colonialism. The two world superpowers were instrumental in spreading anti-colonialism and supporting the young nations of Africa.
The independence processes took place in a variety of ways. Whether through violent conflicts or through negotiations with the metropolises, Africans were in search of emancipation.
The year 1960 was marked as the African Year as a significant number of countries gained their independence from French and English colonialism, especially through peaceful opposition. This was the case in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, Somalia, Nigeria, Mauritania and Gabon. In the following years Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Kenya, Gambia, Rwanda and Uganda were declared independent.
