I love the idea of AirTags… but still think this technology should’ve been integrated to other apple products the same way. I can’t find my AirPods when they’re in their charging case and it’s the only way I ever lost (or miss placed) them… having to look for them all around my house. Also I’m not sure about this but if I happen to lose my MacBook and it’s turned off I think find my only shows the last location where it’s been connected. I think apple should integrate the same technology of AirTags to other products, where the find my device is able to take a bit of battery from Mac, iPad, iPhone… so they can be located even if turned off. Either way this video was amazing to watch, very informative and the new style looks good!

Thanks. That was a very profound explanation. While I knew how it works, what I learnt from this video is the way the tags identify “malicious activity” by tracking how long it’s been away from the owner. But there’s a flip-side to it, a big one. If someone steals my bag 💼, and is quite far away for me to reach soon, this feature will end up notifying the “thief” that he’s being tracked which defeats the entire purpose of using the air tag. In the choice between saving a stalking victim or tracking a thief, they chose the former. Not sure how informed and thought out the decision was, because The severity of each case is always subjective.

@RightOnTarget1
2 жыл бұрын
As I noted elsewhere, where the AirTag fails is the stolen item scenario. Apple is so worried about stalkers that they made it useless for finding stolen items. It alerts the thief and helps them find it so they can discard it. Tile does it better, especially the flat credit card model that fits in your billfold.

@@RightOnTarget1 Yeah but its better to have something stolen than someone to be stalked and potentially harmed - Although I do agree with the form factor argument. It will become better if things start having AirTag tech built in (I believe Apple showed off some bikes) or provide convoluted, hidden compartments to place AirTags then people aren't going to mess about. If someone steals your bag and then get a notification that they're being tracked - if they cant quickly find it they'll more likely ditch it bc its not worth the payoff to be caught.

4:40 After 3 days without being connected to an owners phone and being moving around (accelerometer), the AirTag will play a sound. Apple has said that that time frame may shorten in the future.

I think 24 hours is good, while they aren't for anti-theft, I don't want them ringing in the event a vehicle is stolen, as they might be the last resort to finding the vehicle. EDIT: if a bike can have one, like in their graphics, a car could also then have one.

@@azan-183 me and my gf were just talking about this, say someone stole my wallet or backpack, an an airtag is attached to it, cool i'm gonna track it to get my stuff back, but then it starts alerting the thief that there's an airtag nearby, either audibly or through their iphone, find the airtag, throw it out the window and move on.... a few hours later i find my airtag on the side of the road but no wallet or backpack nearby, this device can work against you at finding your stuff unfortunately. i ordered 4 tags, 2 for my 2 dogs to wear on their collars, and the other 2 for keychains.

@@Omar-em7rl Just so you know, Apple has currently set the time at 3 days for when it starts ringing but said they could make it shorter in the future. EDIT: Oops, I forgot the original comment already mentioned this

@@azan-183 looks like it got edited, cool, 3 days works pretty good for anti theft stuff, what doesn't look so good is the fact that someone can track you every day as long as they swap the air tag with another one every other day. so if someone wants to track you or your vehicle, every other day the tracker needs to be switched with another to continue tracking the person.

What if someone stole your property and then the AirTag starts making noises because it thinks you are following them. It pretty much alerts the criminal that they are being tracked and they can get rid of the tracker.

Good video. Airtag uses Bluetooth which is a low-powered radio transceiver in your phone. Bluetooth range is only about 30 feet. At long distances the big reveal for me is that the airtag will secretly activate nearby iphones to send you location without the iphone users knowledge.

How does the AirTag differentiate between it getting stolen by someone and it being used maliciously to track someone? In both scenarios the AirTag would be with someone else.
@bigearn8782
2 жыл бұрын
Yup. If stolen, looks like the thief would be notified there's a tracking device in the area. Can you imagine being in an airplane and every Apple user gets a notification? By a dozen other users?

If a thief with an iPhone steals your tagged ex-possession, Apple will tell you where the thing is long before the thief is told you might be stalking them. Furthermore, if you report your thing as stolen to the police, there is the possibility that Apple would tell them where the thief is -or at least their iphone- even after they’ve deactivated or disposed of the tag. I’m not entirely sure that Apple can or would do that. How well encrypted is your location information on their servers? Any way even if your thief does get a stalker alert and disposes of the tag, you are no worse off (other than being out the cost of one air tag) for having tagged your thing and possibly better off. On the other hand, a thief with an Android can use Apple’s anti-stalking app to tell them that there is a hidden airtag in your prize possession without their phone ratting out their location. So this is a selling point for Andoids over iPhones in the criminal phone market.

@@FAB-ix9fu This was touched on in the video and I’ve seen a few articles on it. It’s a very creepy scenario. It’s not clear that the 3 day (or even 24 hour) period before Apple tells you you are being stalked is enough. For example if a partner goes to a women’s (or men’s, but it’s usually women’s) shelter or a friend’s house, 24 period is way too long, especially given that a stalker can renew that grace period even without being able to access the device - as I understand it, just being in Bluetooth range for a few minutes would be good enough to reset the count down.

I wish the offline behavior was integrated into all of their products. Laptops, phones and tablets should have effectively an air tag built in that can ping with the phone off so someone can’t just turn the phone off of trying to steal it.
@SamPhoenix_
Жыл бұрын
iPhones do use the same tech, your phone will still ping off other iphone users and update its location, but it can be turned off temporarily - which is fine, except from the fact it can still be turned off when the phone is in lost mode.

Excellent video. Can you comment on the ability to use this to keep track of a family member (elderly parent, etc) who does not have an iphone nearby regularly? I understand that the signal will be uploaded to the cloud through other iphones. But if there is a long period of time without an iphone nearby, will it chirp or repeatedly ping and therefore drain the battery?

I bought one when I upgraded to an iphone 11, and attached it to my home keys. The times I've put them down somewhere or covered them up with something, like magazines, cushions etc then searched and searched for them (usually when I'm late for something!) now I just use iphone to ping the tag and hey presto there they are! Thankfully I've only used this at home, but a great value and useful accessory.

Great video, thanks. The idea that one's iPhone is involuntarily taking part in a shared locator network may sound creepy, to be honest. This locator function gives the impression that Apple is behaving like they are the owner of all iPhones, but they are not. On the bright side of things, Airtags are a revolutionary breakthrough, but not a spying device, since it warns the neighboring iPhone of its presence; I only whished Android had something similar...

It does indeed sound creepy but since they said it doesn’t use up battery and it’s all encrypted I am perfectly okay if it helps me or someone else find a lost item that may be of significant value, I had my phone as well as a full wallet stolen from me, thousands worth of stuff taken from me without my control and I would have done anything to get it all back so this is an amazing invention imo even if it seems creepy at firdt
