New to me 2022 Ryker 900 Sport as of a week ago, and a question about oil. Saw the XPS kit in Amazon but if I wanted to get items separately, curious if the 5-40wt synthetics, “European labeled” oils I’m finding in the parts stores suitable for the 900 Ryker? They do have the API SN classification. TIA

As Beth notes in the video, DO NOT CROSS THREAD or OVERTIGHTEN the drain plugs. YOU WILL STRIP YOUR DRAIN PLUGS (like me)! This year i am replacing my oil pan (sump?) because i stripped the small drain plug. I misread the manual torque specs and tightened to ft lbs. Smh 🙄. I was able to drill a new hole, but it started leaking this year. Its a cheap fix if you do it yourself, but the garage charges an arm and a leg

Thanks Beth for the video! I was wondering how hard it is to change oil and filter. One thing I noticed Can Am has the specs for the Bolts. They had 30 NM or 22lbs ok then 15 NM or 18 lbs. The math doesn't work. I looked it up and it is 11 lbs for 15 NM. I know it doesn;t matter. You seemed very happy or I should almost say giddy, working with your husband. I just picked up my Rally today and yes I'm at work, but tomorrow I took the day off to ride. The first thing I did was to try out the horn. I am still laughing about the no horn situation. Thanks again

Her cousin and Hubby also have ridden many times with us. He has a big Harley Ultra Classic. They have gone on many trips. My wife is afraid to ride on the highway. I told her the highway is safer than city ridding but she is still a scary cat!

@RykerRydes

I’m sorry for any problems that you have experienced. But I’ve never torqued anything regarding an oil change. My suggestion has always been to hand tight everything and then come in and tighten it after. But it’s very important to never over tighten. The only thing I torque to spec, are the wheels. Please follow your manual regarding any torque specifications.

I did my first oil change on my rally, I put in the 3 quarts first and it read over the max fill by about a 1/4 inch. Any ideas why? It was a pain siphoning off the oil. I started it up and it was running like garbage. Knocking in the engine. I let it sit for a few hours. Checked the oil, it read between min and max. Warmed it up to operating level. Absolutely no oil on the dip stick. Let it sit overnight. Still no oil on the stick. Put more oil in to between min and max. Started it up. No more knocking, it was running and sounding fine. Anyone have any ideas as to how this could happen? It was soo odd.
@RykerRydes
5 ай бұрын
There is a VERY SPECIFIC way to check the oil level. After the bike is warmed up, and you turned off the engine you have 15 s to check the oil before it is sucked back into the bike (which will give the illusion, when you pull your dipstick, that it has zero oil in it)

Major misinfo u guys spilled out, the washer doesn’t has to be changed every time may be every two or three oil changes or when u see the old washer gone bad, the rubber seal u rub it with little oil to make sure u can take it out easy on the next oil change, cuz rubber on clean metal surface will wore out and stick and it will pain in the butt to take out and might tear to pieces and then u have to clean the remnants .

Good job. Changing your own oil can be a right of passage for the new rider. It allows you to get more familiar with your bike by seeing and touching parts that you normally wouldn't. For me, it provides a deeper feeling of ownership and oneness with your ride. Unfortunately I get to pay full price for all my service needs at my local dealership because of my physical limitations. One helpful hint my father passed on to me is using a cheap plastic drop cloth (5 for $5 at lowes) to cover the area under your pan and Ryker. That'll keep you from getting those errant oil drips from used gloves, drain plugs, and splashes from the drain pan on the driveway or garage floor. Another great video. Thanks
@RykerRydes

Hi Kevin!!! That was written so well and perfectly captures how I felt changing the oil. It is definitely a feeling of oneness with the bike. Well said! Your dad was a smart man! I put a garbage bag down, but clearly wasn't enough. Had to run out and buy the sand to clean up my oil spills. It worked great and I now have 10 lbs of it!! lol I wish you lived closer, I would gladly change your oil for you. Now that I have done it, the next time will be a breeze...especially if I am not recording and talking my way through it! Stay well my friend!

Amazing that a dealer would charge you $300 to change your oil, that’s a rip off for a no brainer project. A quick tip for you Beth... there are two kinds of torque wrenches foot pounds and inch pounds. You certainly want to be sure you are Torquing with the right tools, using a foot pound wrench on a inch pound fastener will surely strip it out. Also it is a good idea to put your drain plugs in first and then after you install the new filter in the filter reservoir to carefully fill the reservoir with the filter in, the filter will slowly absorb the oil and the level will drop so you continue filling the reservoir a little at a time until the level stops dropping. Then install the Oil filter cap. When you do this your engine is not starving for oil on the initial start up until the oil pump fills up The filter and filter reservoir and the engine oil galleys. (The internal engine oil pipes, if you will.)

Should I change my oil for the first time at 200 miles right after the brake in period
@RykerRydes
5 ай бұрын
Ahhh the big oil change debate..... my experience: I changed my oil for the first time at 4,000 miles and I now have close to 25,000 miles on her and running great. My manual (2019) states the first oil change should be done at 6,000 miles or 1 year (whichever comes first). I do believe the newer manuals state that the oil should be changed after the break in period. My 2 cents: It can never hurt the bike to do too many oil changes. Is it necessary at 200 miles?...not sure. If you can afford it, or are able to do it yourself, why not do it. The bike does come with a magnetic drain plug that will catch any metal shavings that may come off during the break in period. Bottom line, changing the oil is probably the single best thing you can do for your Ryker. I do it once a season, if it needs it or not.

I was told by the dealer I would need to change it at 600 miles for the break in period. Is this true?

Absolutely not. That is NOT what the manual says. However, some people do change the oil early on, and certainly cannot hurt. Personally (and I am not a mechanic), I don't think it is necessary. I simply follow the manual. No problems so far!

What method do you use to remove oil from the filter housing before removing the filter so you do not make a big mess? Great vid. Thanks
@RykerRydes

I just use a rag to remove it, then immediately place it in a plastic grocery bag. Seems to work well.

@@RykerRydes Thanks for responding. Just to clarify the old oil remains in reservoir, does not drain out like you would expect. I use a turkey baster to remove as much as possible so as not to contaminate the new oil, before installing the new filter. Thanks

If the oil is leaking from the plug underneath after an oil change, is it possible the plug is too tight or not tight enough? Trying to debate whether I can just tighten it myself or return it to the dealership where they’ll have it for too long
@RykerRydes

It could definitely be that the plug is not on tight enough. Hopefully that’s what it is and not that you put the bolt in at angle and stripped the oil pan. 😬 Keep me posted.

Did you change your oil after the break in period which from what I read in my wife’s manual for her Ryker is 300km (we’re Canadian)or about 180 miles. Or was this your first oil change here? Thanks.

Just checked out this question in Spyderlovers forums and it looks like we can wait till at least 3000 miles, pretty sure it will happen before then but not 300 km.

Hi Wally! No you don’t need to do an oil change after the break in period. Could you share what page in the manual you read that. And yes, that was my first oil change.
@wallymurray620

Ryker Rydes It say on pg 36 that after the break in period , 300 km, the vehicle should be inspected as per the Maintenance Schedule. So I was unsure if the meant to treat that point like a regular maintenance point, which would include an oil change or wait till 10000km, 6000 miles hence the question. I felt 300 was way to short but I also will be doing a change well before the 10000 km point, or should I say my wife will. It’s her bike and she is very inspired by all you videos and wants to do her own wrenching on the bike too. Just would like to say we both really enjoy all of your videos and will be watching for more throughout our Alberta winter. We had hoped to take our bikes to AZ this winter but unless the borders open up and the numbers get better in AZ, looks like we’ll be spending it up in Canada this year. Thanks again.

Hi, great videos. On my 2021 ryker rally manual page 102 I see they suggested 2.8 liters (2.96qt) of oil but on your video you said 3.5 liters (3.7qt) of oil. I'm cracking my head here. Could you please tell me how much oil did you get in your oil change kit since the website doesn't really tell you the amount of oil in the box.

Where should your oil be on the dipstick?
@RykerRydes

If you look very closely you will see markings on the dipstick. It should be between min and max. Be sure to follow the exact sequence of checking the oil. It is different than checking a car.

On a cold engine the oil will just be on the end of dip stick. Per BRP when checking engine oil level Ryker should be on level surface, engine must be hot at operating temp(ride 9 miles), turn engine off check oil level within 10 seconds of engine shut off. Between the MIN and MAX lines is 500 cc/ml or 16 oz. If you check the Ryker cold the normal level will show just touching the end of the dipstick if you start to add to bring to full you just added half a quart and a butt load of problems.
