I agree with other comments that she is “entry level.” She definitely was that for me. Reading both of her books and watching her show on Netflix was my first exposure to the idea that you can live a more meaningful life with less material objects. In all seriousness, Marie Kondo’s methods helped start my journey to minimalism. Using her book, I got rid of about 70% of my books and clothing 2 years ago. I don’t find her as useful today, but I’m grateful for her content helping me begin my journey.

Marie Kondo’s method was actually life changing for me. Her method with keeping what sparks joy, helped me give away tons of things that I had not used for years. If you read her book (which I do not think you did :), notice how she writes that you have to use that approach also when you want to bring new things into your home. Thanks to her, I now have a better sense of what I love, have an airy home and I do not compromize on quality anymore. I guess some people use joy-principle as an excuse to get a lot of new stuff, but she woke the minimalist in me. I got really disappointed when I discovered that she had opened an online store. The worst types of minimalists are those who critizise others for practising minimalism ‘the wrong’ way, so beware, guys! We need inspiration from all of you. I want to fill my life with a few, cherry picked belongings that spark joy. For those of you who feel the same way, I recommend the youtube channel A Small wardrobe.

If I recall correctly, in her book she advises against going out & buying containers. I believe she says that you probably already have boxes and containers and it’s better to work with what you have rather than go out & get more stuff. 🤔 That said, I’m finding my own path towards minimalism & love reading & getting any ideas I can. Like getting started in broad categories such as books one day, clothes another day etc. has helped me a lot. Also the famous “does this spark joy” question helps me a lot when making decisions. It’s kind of another way of looking at “how would I feel if this spontaneously combusted right now” lol.

Before taking on this question, it would have been helpful if you’d watched Marie’s episodes on Netflix. Some of the homes were hoarder homes, with family members experiencing real anxiety. The end result was clearing out homes, keeping only what “sparked joy”, restoring relationships, and creating a more manageable and meaningful life. The work you are doing is not so different from the work Marie is doing. Her storage containers are also unique, allowing you to see at a glance all that you own.

I read both books and listen to the minimalists. They are each different strokes for different folks. Marie got me started in just analyzing what I owned to make sure I was only keeping what made me happy. I decluttered a lot but then when I was ready, moved onto the minimalists, which is still too extreme for me. It helped me analyze all my purchases coming into my house and why I was buying things. Each show helped me through what I needed at the time.

I too started with Marie Kondo. I listened over and over to her audio book. What I took away is the art of tidying. I was not taught as a young girl how or when to discard things or how to tidy my space. Marie Kondo gave me permission to decide for myself my relationship with things. I have been able to pass this along to my kids now. I throw away many things daily where I used to think I had to save. I am more conscious about what I am buying and where it will go in my space. I don’t think she is minimalist but she teaches how to interact with the things in our life. As a christian I do not value belongings but we live in a materialistic world and its too easy to over accumulate. Thats why we need many voices teaching us about minimalism.

Yeah I think it's a opinion based on what rappresent now Marie Kondo because at the first she don't promote too much to buy things but at the first she said the opposite, especially in the first book (when she wrote about remembering when she was teenager and continue to buy stuff for organize and collocation and don't think about the real thing like ''I've too much stuff" so ok organize but not hide all only what I like and organize). Now she promote more things or things that contain other things and probably The Minimalist talk about what is now the concept of Marie. And I'm agree with them, I follow Marie from the start everywhere, every book, every interview, post, video, program.. She changed. She was incredible and I'm sure she is still a little big woman but yeah, the opposite of the concept of The Minimalism but for most of people on the web (video here and other social) , probably remember the first times of Marie, connect them like "ok the don't say the same things in the same ways but however, minimalism=Marie Kondo..". I don't know if I explain correctly but more or less is what I saw from years until now.

As several others in the comments have said, Marie Kondo's method is more than just tidying and organization. It involves getting rid of the things that you no longer need while keeping and organizing the things that you love or otherwise make you happy. This is actually very helpful. Most people I know have no real sense of organizing. Her method helps you learn this. So you have important thing toss out unimportant things and you end up with a lot more space which in turn makes you happy. And if you keep organizing and putting things back after use then you have truly have good results. The first dude was very misinformed about Kondo's method and totally undersold her way.

The extra man commentating misses the fact that Marie Kondo also has a story. Just because you don't know the story doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It would be great to see this done after you all actually read her books perhaps? She had extremely high anxiety and so cleaning and decluttering was very soothing for her, but unlike many of us who like to keep things, she was obsessed with getting rid of stuff and had to find a way to channel that energy and anxiety into something positive. She also has a spiritual viewpoint and her way of honouring the material item before letting it go is really beautiful. One of the differences seems to be that Ryan a Joshua came from a background where they originally thought having more was the answer, whereas Marie Kondo thought that by having less it was the answer. She had to be very patient and not force her ideas on her family etc. I really appreciate all that you guys do, and have found useful things for my life from both stories. A big part of Marie Kondo's method is honoring the stuff that you decide to keep. So after you have done the work to declutter, it's a beautiful way of honoring and organizing the items that you have left, the ones that spark joy. It is about her story to a degree and gives you something that you can do right now. Her book brought me enough pleasure that I continued to reach and learn more about the idea of being happy with my belongings. That led me to you guys. The basic philosophy for you each is the same. Pocesssions can add to or take away from happiness. I have learned a lot from all if you and others who preach similar concepts. My favorite book was The Joy Of Less by Francine Jay. Both Marie Kondo and minimalism stand for leading a meaningful life and surrounding yourself with stuff that bring value to your life. The difference is that with Marie you can also have more than you need if the things are organised well and you have enough space for them,ie. her approach works both for minimalists and non-minimalists, whereas minimalism stands for less stuff and having things that we really need. She pushes people towards minimalism, but if they are not ready allows them to live according to where they are at the moment. Additionally, Marie gave us the best methodology how to orginise things, and nobody can beat that.

Marie Kondo has a very simple yet very effective question if you’re sincere deep inside and you’re able to answer it: DOES IT SPARK JOY? If the answer right away is yes then you can keep it. Surrounding yourself with things that only sparks joy isn’t that beautiful?! Why does she use containers? Simply it’s a matter of organizing and optimizing time when you’re looking for something. Inside those containers are stuffs that you decided to keep because it sparks joy. Marie Kondo resonates with me and so you guys to me. More power and keep it up!

Marie Kondo gave me permission to ask the question "What things give me joy?" I'd always kept things because that's what we were supposed to do until we found the perfect recipient for it. "I paid good money for that" or "There's still wear left in that" were dominant thoughts. Folding the clothes addressed the "out of sight, out of mind" issue I had, and made me aware of the limits of my drawer and closet space. But keeping something just because I loved it was a radically new concept for me. I'd never asked that question before, and it seemed decadent and sinful at first.

That’s why as an entrepreneur, I never look at people who work in my field as competitors, but as compatriots who are working to help the same audience I am…’we are potential joint venture partners and if nothing else need to support each other’s mission. I’ve loved that in the minimalist movement, the well known practitioners and teachers are very open about sharing who they learned from and enjoy in the space. "Containerism" as I will call it, can too easily give us a way to shuffle stuff we don't want to deal with. The clutter remains, but hidden, which creates a bigger problem in all those things you don't want to confront by hiding them where you can't see them. Minimalism is the tough love solution. No offense to Marie Kondo's message but her message in my opinion, from what I have observed does not seem like minimalism. It appears to be more about organizing and sparking joy. Her method seems to leave more room for trying to justify keeping more stuff as long as it "sparks joy" and is placed in an organized way. I prefer The Minimalists because I have learned to continuously ask myself the question of why with physical, mental clutter and so much more. I continue to do the deep inner work by utilizing The Minimalist's methods of knowing and applying my values and how people and things will or will not authentically and lifestyle appropriate fit into my life. I ask myself if I say yes to this I am saying no to something else and vice versa. The Minimalists methods have helped me to use more logic, dig deep internally, live more intentionally and I can apply these tactics to various parts of my life.

I prefer you guys, your story and your delivery. You inspired me when I was in a very dark place. MK and her story of tidying 🤮

If you read her book, Marie Kondo starts by explaining that after years of tidying and organising, she realised that the only way to be tidy and organised was to intentionally declutter; only retaining the items you love. It’s more than just folding shirts. Agreed with Ryan at the end that it’s different strokes for different folks.

I se Marie Kondo as the entry level minimalist and you guys and Fumio Sasaki as the more advanced level.

Try this for size: If you have 200 of something--shoes, ties, jockey shorts--you can improve your life by reducing the sheer number of things to just those that you use/need. But. If you've reduced the number of shoes/ties/jockey shorts you own, but toss them into a drawer or closet in a tangled mess, your life will probably still feel chaotic. Marie Kondo's approach tells you to organize what you have so that (1) you can find what you need easily, (2) your stuff doesn't wear out because it's been treated roughly, and (3) the stuff you own lasts longer so you wind up buying less.

Marie Kondo says sort into categories, declutter and then organize. The books were far more detailed and worth following. Something like a “packing party”……

I've been watching her Netflix special, and Marie does also focus on decluttering and finding value in your items from clothes to old magazines. If they don't bring you joy or happiness any longer, then they are to be discarded/donated and we bid thanks to them for what they have served. I think if you're into the Minimalists or into Marie Kondo, they both work very well together in organizing your life, and I am very grateful to have found both, and the value they have provided.

I feel disappointed by the way you have looked for the differences and not the similarities between the two approaches. You have made a false dichotomy, I think.

The original message of Marie Kondo is to only keep that which sparks joy. That's it.

I've been on my "journey" for a few years...having inherited multiple family member's full houses of belongings - EEK! I made my own recipe of Minimalizing/decluttering/tidying : having discovered you two great guys :) and Joshua Becker , Marie Kondo and Dawn from the Minimal Mom. You all have your own ways of teaching the message, catch phrases that stick and lessons that resonate with me. As well as being charismatic individuals. Not all teachers can get through to every student : but you lot speak and inspire directly to me.

Artists need a lot of 'stuff' to create. For example, a pallet of colors, whether paint, cloth, woods, yarn, etc. Also, tools, machines, that have specific uses. For this 'stuff', organizing works well. I am also getting rid of stuff, loads, so there is a blend of clearing and organizing.

I agree you all are similar and Marie is like others have said, "entry-level". I do want to say that as someone who lives at/below the poverty line in a one-bedroom apartment where the space is not well laid out with my husband, baby, and dog - things feel chaotic unless we organize our things. And we are not particularly attached to stuff. We both like living with less. Clutter and having too much stuff make me and my husband feel more anxious. But I actually do like to organize what we do have - and pretty much everything we have does indeed serve a purpose. But I also value a beautiful space. :) I like clean lines and a certain design style if I can have that and not be wasteful. Organizing our belongings to me also enables me to constantly re-evaluate whether the things I have are still useful, serve a purpose, or "spark joy". I don't like it when things feel "haphazard". I like it when the architecture of a place speaks for itself and the "stuff" isn't owning the place. Beauty and aesthetics are also important, I think. And beauty often has a subjective side to it. To me, having some containers to organize the things I really do love and use is good and important. Sure, I could just leave it lying about or toss it in a drawer... but I love being intentional with the things I own and make sure they are accessible and stored beautifully.

When I was a young human our way of life wasn’t called minimalism, nor was there a Marie Kondo in our ear. It was Chelo throwing a chankla at you if your empty room somehow became untidy…😝 We naturally lived simple and enjoyed even the little things we had. The “one” television, and the broken swing set, the front yard tree we climbed and the “one” car 🚗 that seemed to last a life time. I have found the minimalist to take me back to that time with a little help from Marie Kondo to keep it all tidy in my small space. 💕🙏🏼

Isn't Marie Kondo in fact arguing the same thing you are in terms of getting rid of stuff that doesn't make you happy? If you get rid of stuff, isn't that essentially the same thing you guys argue?

Los conceptos compartidos por los minimalistas me han ayudado a quedarme con las cosas que realmente necesito, y las técnicas de Marie Kondo me han servido para tener en orden esas cosas.
