On air I try and stay upbeat and positive, but the last 10 months have been a struggle for me. I live on my own, I worked right the way through the pandemic and I’ve struggled with being away from my friends and family. I put up a post on instagram a week or so ago opening up about not feeling ok and the reaction to it blew me away. I had so many comments of support and love I felt overwhelmed. One thing that really surprised me was when poet Ceri Baker messaged me to say she'd created a poem after seeing my post. She recorded her poem 'Touch Hunger' and submitted it to my radio show Upload on BBC Radio Bristol.
I had to take this opportunity to be honest and open with my audience. I sat behind the microphone in my studio on Thursday night and said "Listen, I'm not ok. I know I sit here every night and but on a brave face, but I'm not ok". I spoke with my on air broadcast assistant Pippa about how living on your own is tough, facing lockdown 3.0 has been the worst of the UK lockdowns so far and how sometimes, what you see on social media isn't an honest representation of how someone is really feeling. I played out Ceri's poem on air and chatted to her afterwards.
Give this a watch and share your thoughts in the comments.
