I actually do tend to draw backgrounds when drawing in black and white (schetches being an exception). When drawing in black and white you can focus on adding interesting textures since they will be more apparent in black and white. This applies to the background as well. You could use a few textures there as well and make it more interesting. A white background is fine and does the job well enough for a black and white drawing, a more interesting background could make your art piece even better.

I really feel the same way. I never really had much problem with objects and machines or sceneries, but drawing characters is a fucking nightmare. I just have no idea how the proportions of the human body work. It's super frustrating and it's one of the main reasons I gave up on drawing. It's just super frustrating to know that I have this perfect drawing of GlaDos from Portal with all the intricate machinery and wiring, but I can't draw a fucking simple humanoid character for the life of me. One of the main reasons I wanted to draw was because I wanted to bring my imaginary characters to life. But that dream got sadly crushed lol. My respect goes out to character artists. I seriously don't understand how they do it, it's actually like arcane magic to me. The human body, and organic bodies in general, are just too fluid and curvy. It's so difficult to comprehend that shape in a 2D space. What pisses me off the most is that some people don't even use construction but they still make really good character designs. Just think of every cartoon you've ever watched. How the fuck did they give Phineas a triangular head and still make it look good. It's wild. I just can't understand that. (For context this is when I was just learning to draw from scratch, and I haven't drawn anything in like 3 years since then lol.)

When you do that background in a pencil sketch it actually looks nice and makes your character pop more

I only draw backgrounds if the reference picture has one otherwise I'll just splash random colours a blur it in a way that looks colourful but still makes you focus on the painting

I was making my profile picture earlier but didn't want a blank background so I changed the whole scene to make it a rainy day lol but I usually just do the gradient background and sometimes add some lightnings and random sparkles maybe.

I think your picture looks great but you need to learn value, your hair looked a bit saturated while standing in the dark place meanwhile me personally that shades at the face could’ve done better. Good idea, I think you have your own styles but you could improve more tbh.

I HATE having a white background, so I normally add shadows or sometimes stars, I add something. I don't spend HOURS on a background when the only thing people are going to pay attention to is the main thing I drew, but I Make it as expressive as possible. It's a rule I made for myself, I have 10 minutes to make a nice expressive background, that way I make it look good without it taking up so much time.

The thing I usually do is grabbing an image, make it fill the entire canvas with that image, edit it to make it look weird like with twirl or whatever, then I make it pixelated, add a grandient map and whalla

What hurts more is that I always spend so much time making the backgrounds in most of my drawings and people never talk about it unless there is some very particular character involved in that specific background 😭

Well the thing is, Your drawing is what should have attention, Not the background. However if you make the background blurry it’ll look way better, But generally, I still like it without because some backgrounds have a lot of unnecessary details that catch your eye even when blurred. That distracts.
