The most important factor is "a good rubber surround", and speakers built in 1984 were made to last, just like amplifiers and other audio equipment. @@Techscrews Ferrofluid had come a long way. The first example used to gel up after a few years and now the new stuff doesn't. ADS is an example. They use butyl rubber surrounds on the woofers and never ever apply anything to the rubber, they last over 60 years without getting brittle or cracking. So many musicians will tell you that they have speakers in combos & cabs dating back to 60’s etc. They are working just fine. Best thing to do is to use them regularly, also every 5 to 6 years, remove speaker & turn it through 180 degrees. Cones tend to sag slightly over the years.
