Besides, I'm sure the plot/storylines will get better with each movie. It not like Harry Potter where each movie has an individual plot. The series is like an onion, and you peal back a layer with each movie, at least that's what I'm choosing to believe, for now.

@brandovlogs You're seriously comparing this trash to *any* Kurosawa movie? A movie about how the humans (booo! hisss!) have been defeated by primitives with spears (hoorah!) so they...resurrect the moron who screwed up and ask him to lead a second attack? And where humans have to use incredibly expensive avatars to survive on the planet/moon but one kid can manage it for years with a simple face mask? There's bad plotting and then there's completely breaking your own internal consistency and logic. If all you want is pretty pictures, go to an art gallery. Or, you know, the mountains.

@brandovlogs I can also give to you one of the greatest movies of all time that holds itself by only the plot which is “12 Angry Men”. That movie is 98% set on a single room, yet it’s magnificent story makes it one of the greatest ever made.

After working on 3D animation as a hobby for years I learnt how to identify and recognize many 3D and VFX techniques on animation and movies, always taking away my immersion to the media, but watching this movie I could never notice anything out of place, everything is so well done and it really feels like you're watching something real, everything makes sense visually and feels natural

As a painter myself, I know how intimidating or challenging water can be to replicate. I imagine its the same deal for the CGI world, and when I watched this I was actually blown away by how good the water looked. I actually can't believe they finally solved how to animate water.

@ZzzZzz if you want it to look real, animating it would be WAY too complicated. Think about how a wave bumps into the side of it's container and bounces back, creating new shapes and interacting with other waves. Or how any object moving in the water will generate new waves and interact with old ones. Water will stick to the object too. You can art direct the simulation, but it's not quite the same concept as traditional animation. Ocean waves are most often simulated with Fast Fourier Transform algorithm (FFT)

It is the first that is actually real looking. There is a ton of propriatory tech in there that studios will struggle to recreate. Weta in this regard is a titan. They can do the stuff Disney/Pixar does, where basically they have the money and time to throw at problems in a way no other post production studio in the world can. This is why they are revolutionary. The film studios pay them to be so. They dont for the majority.

@LeHorn James If you want to have a movie that appeals to the largest possible audience, you kinda gotta stick to tried and true plot formats. While the water scenes in Avatar 2 are undoubtedly gorgeous and incredible, I do want to say how amazed I was when I found out the water scene in Avatar 1 WASN’T done in water. Obviously if you compare them side to side you’ll notice differences, but I’ve seen the first movie a few times now and I honestly would’ve never noticed. Incredible acting to pull that off, too.

James Cameron, as well respected as he is, will be regarded even more highly a century from now I think. Once the dust settles, once the generation of salty/jealous haters dies out, his legacy will march on. What he does, the effort and dedication he shows to creating these experiences, is unrivalled. The guy’s a film-making genius.

@LeHorn James Criticising someone JUST for putting lots of effort into a project is, I’d say, most certainly a (weird) form of hating. Surely reserving judgement until the film is released and viewed is the way to go. Otherwise it’s blind criticism of someone’s strong work ethic. Very bizarre.

50$ for just two Imax 3D tickets? Damn, Cinema in the U.S. is for sure overpriced. I paid 30€ for two tickets in Austria, Europe and those were the most expensive cinema tickets i ever bought. 1$ has pretty much the same worth as 1€. I would never pay 25€ just to see a movie one time. Not even for something as visually amazing as Avatar.

This guy Cameron just keeps breaking the mold of what cinema making is. He keeps coming out with new and exciting ways to film and always makes them look so real you feel like you're there in that world. Remember when thousands of people had that Avatar Depression after watching the first film? They literally hated when the movie ended and they had to go back to the world we live in and made them depressed. That is how movie making should be.

The Water in this film is just unreal of how REAL IT FELT.

It's definitely cool technology. Massive respect for the work that went into that. Really makes me wish the writing was up to the same standard. At the end of the day, I'll watch something incredibly pretty once, maybe twice. But a well-crafted story? One that rewards you with more detail the closer you pay attention. One that doesn't leave you wondering where the giant fish army went? There's is no end to how often I'll enjoy rewatching it.

Saw it last night and loved it. My only gripe was the switch between frame rates. This was something very obvious to me as to my perspective the frame rate dropped so many times throughout the film it felt like claymation. The person I saw it with, who is a non gamer and unaware of framerates and picture quality differences, said it was buttery smooth for them the whole time, but I definetly definetly noticed it switching back and forth.

@virtual ghetto Movement of everything goes from super smooth to super choppy, kind of like when a game starts to lag. I wouldn't know how else to explain it. If you watch a youtube video with 1080p 60fps for a minute or so, to get your eyes used to it, and then switch to the 720p option (which will be 30fps) you can probably tell the difference too. For me it's like night and day.

Same here, I thought way more people would notice. The framerate switching kept throwing me out of the experience because I noticed it every single time it switched, even when I was actively trying to ignore it. And damn did it switch often. I *really* hope movies don't continue doing this and just settle for one rate for the whole movie. I had no problems with the Hobbit looking so smooth because when it doesn't switch, I just get used to it really quickly.

The movie was exactly what i was hoping for. I knew that its gonna be hard to top the first, you cant invent the wheel twice and we knew its gonna be humans vs pandorans again so all i hoped for was a beautiful immersive experience and some nice action scenes thats just genuinly nice to watch and they delivered. The 3rd one has a chance to be even greater because they got a good plot hook with the military guy and his son, theres space for character development and surprises. I love it.

After seeing it in 3D in theater I was allready pretty sure they changed frame rates between scences because the action scenes had kind of a "cut scene" vibe to me that is often associated with 48-60 fps. I thought I was imagining things but I am happy I got it right :) Thanks for the great breakdown! Edit: I also find it facinating what they did to the facial skin (I think its suburface scattering) interaction with light underwater. They perfectly nailed how faces look smoother underwater (e.g. 10:50 in the video). Does this effect result from the refractive index of skin and water beeing fairly close to each other (in compairson to skin and air?). Never really thought about that until now?

Besides the issue with bubbles, I think the overriding problem is that having a mouthpiece will get in the way of face acting. I think that crew could use rebreather or dual-hose systems, though. At the very least, the safety specialists that watch out for problems and rescue the actors who black out, ought to have long-duration rebreathers.
  • Merlin Blatterer

my first thought also was, why didn't the crew use rebreathers? As for the actors rebreathers would be bad, because you move differently if you have to conserve oxygen. also they give you different aerodynamics and different mass and center of gravity.

Never underestimate JC. I've done 3D visual effects and always can nitpick scenes but the effects were so well done, I just accepted it. Every time I saw a scene and thought about how it was done, they had already moved on to another scene. It wore down my art brain and I just accepted it was Pandora. Eyes were still an issue on the tree people (a bit too cartoony, take a look at a cat's eyes and a still from Avatar 2) but the sea people had amazing eyes. The water effects were amazing. The 3D was amazing. Even the attention to biological evolution was impressive as you could see things like vestigial appendages.and shared genetic traits hinting at common evolutionary ancestors. f I had one negative on the visuals of Pandora is the animals don't look alien enough. In the movies we can see the earth equivalent of humans, trees, whales, horses, fish, jellyfish, predatory cats, wolves, etc. It would be neat to see weirder stuff like the little biological USB cables they all have.

One thing that I find interesting is that JC had all the actors and even cameramen and staff hold their breath underwater. I think this was in part to improve the feeling for the underwater scenes in the movie, since a lot of this could have been shot with a two hose rebreather or surface based scuba equipment. Essentially this means you dont blow bubbles into the water when using those, so no distortion of the images and hoses and small rebreather machines could be edited out just as the motion caputre suits would be - and for the staff that would have been even less relevant
