The Oak Ridge Boys bass singer is Richard Sterban. He was shaking the seats with this song in the 1980s. The Oaks took Home Free under their wing and was so happy to sing with Home Free. They told Home Free that they hoped "Elvira" was good to them since because of that song, they each were able to buy a house! 😂 Austin says that the Oak Ridge Boys are like their dirty uncles, joking with them and laughing all the time. And, they still do shows! Amazing guys! And yes, you need to check out Home Free's version of "Honey, I'm Good"!!!

"Elvira" was a huge hit for The Oak Ridge Boys many, many years ago. As one member said in an interview, they never met the lady but Elvira bought them all houses. You are right about the tenor's voice being remarkable for someone over 60. Basses are forever, but tenors fade away usually. If you watch Tim, he sometimes beat boxes (remember the Butts Medley?) along with or in place of Adam, so sometimes you are hearing both. Not to diminish Adam's abilities--he is a phenom. Definitely watch one of the videos of him demonstrating his beat boxing. HF are definitely huge fans of ORB, and seeing them together is a joy.

Elvira was originally a big single hit for The Oak Ridge Boys in the eighties. Everyone remembers the chorus. Many Americans knew what the reference of the chorus was. The line "Hi Ho, Silver!",refers to an old western tv show, The Lone Ranger, from the fifties that played on Saturday morning for children,. It was based on an old radio show from the thirties.. The hero was a masked man with a Native American sidekick. They fought wrongs and badmen in the West. Silver was the Lone Ranger's solid white horse. At the end of every episode, the Lone Ranger would be on a rearing Silver with the line "Hi ho,Silver, away!". Then the two heroes would ride off into the sunset to the sound of The William Tell Overture. The actor who played Tonto was Jay Silverheels, an actual Native American., The arrangement of Elvira in the video was done by Geoff Castelluci of Voiceplay. Geoff had sang a cover of the song earlier with that arrangement. Tim asked permission to use Geoff',s arrangement. One of the great thing about the acapella groups is the cooperation and lack of rivalry. Robb is comparing beards with the Oak Ridge Boy with the long white beard in the video. When they weren't filming, Robb told the man that his wife wouldn't let him grow his beard longer. The Oak Ridge member told Robb, ,"You got a decision to make.", ,

The Oak Ridge Boys were originally a Gospel harmony quartet. They branched into the general market in the 1970s or so, and also started going by the abbreviated name The Oaks. But a lot of fans still prefer the original name. The original version of "Elvira" came out 1966. But the Oaks cover, which came out in 1981, is the best-known version. I never really knew the group that well. But I think that most or all of the 1981 members are still the ones in this vid. A couple of them have very distinctive looks. * There's also a Home Free vid of "American Pie," which they performed along with Don McLean, on the 50th anniversary of the song's (1971) release. I think it was McLean's idea to do that.

The Oaks aren't acapella, although they've done some. They started back in the 1940s(!) as a Southern Gospel quartet (with different personnel, obviously) but the current lineup has been together for decades. Back in the day there wasn't such a demarcation between genres, and groups like the Oaks did both Gospel and secular songs. They went pretty much mainstream country in the late 1970s/early 1980s. I think Duane or William Lee would be the longest-tenured Oak. Their bass, Richard Sterban, actually sang with Elvis when he was a member of the legendary Stamps Quartet before joining the Oaks. Austin's dad sang in a Southern Gospel groups, so I have no doubt that he grew up admiring them and that the shirt is vintage.

If you really want to have Adam’s beatboxing knock your socks off while watching them do a song with the song’s original writer and singer, check out their cover of “American Pie” featuring Don McLean! I’ve heard he almost passed out from going for almost eight minutes straight.

Please check out their collaboration with Kenny Rogers, "Children, Go Where I Send Thee." Such a wonderful piece!! You may need to head to church afterwards.... And not to rain on Home Free's mighty parade, check out Pentatonix's medley of Daft Punk. Just do it.

The Oak Ridge Boys are in both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. My favorite ORB song is probably Y'all Come Back Saloon.

This was a beautiful performance, and a very special arrangement. I like it much better than The Oak Ridge Boys version, and if Home Free did it alone, I'd probably prefer this version as well. It's such a rich and fun execution of this classic.
