The quest for power in the Western Region at Nigeria’s independence provided the crucible on which the politics of the Action Group (AG) was burnt. Obafemi Awolowo, leader of the party and his deputy, Samuel Ladoke Akintola locked horns in an epic battle that consumed the first republic.
The press has been blamed for inflaming passions during the crisis, leading to massive waste of lives and properties. Newspapers were accused of manufacturing truth in favour of their proprietors and allies. Festus Adedayo in his doctoral thesis titled 'The Nigerian Tribune and Hegemonic Politics in Nigeria, 1949 - 1992' argues that newspapers of the period were established for waging political battles.
In this interview, we examine how Awolowo and Akintola used the press as a tool for covert manipulation and shaping of the thoughts and ideas of members of the society.
