And in every single movie and TV show he has ever created there is very frequent use of synchronizing sound effects and music to character movements or other things happening on screen to a degree that very few directors or editors even bother to attempt. This is why he is my favorite director. The whole sequence at the beginning of the film where baby is walking down the street, there are sound effects and movements synchronized to the song that is playing in the background. The police siren makes the whoop sound in time with the music, to name one.

He absolutely is and I think he is underrated by the average movie viewer, and even then, I think the majority of the people who appreciate his skills tend to overlook how amazing he is at synchronizing sound to stuff that is happening on screen with a level of obsessive perfectionism. One example in this movie is at the beginning when baby is walking and dancing on the street, the police siren whoops along with the music. Most directors don't bother having fun with the music and sound effects, but Edgar is clearly obsessed with it.
@Saint_Wolf_

@@GrimAhren Yea, the Cornetto trilogy didn't break the billion mark. And in Baby driver there's a flash, maybe for less than two frames at the start and when baby is watching TV, the picture taken of him at the wheel shows. Or Hot Fuzz being so tightly written where the logic loops back where there are two logical threads running back to back but the conclusion is not the greed of one villager but the pettiness of the whole town.
@DragonsFrogs

@@GrimAhren I love this movie and Shawn of the Dead was great too but there’s a reason that most directors don’t do this stuff, especially the diegetic sound mentioned, because it makes for a very stylized, very specific type of movie. For Baby Driver that works and for some other action comedies but for most genres and movies it would just distract. Not saying ofc that Wright, a great director, isn’t great but you’re talking about how people don’t appreciate or notice what he’s doing which I completely disagree with…you can’t miss what he’s doing! But there’s a reason most directors don’t do this, because they’re not trying to make a movie that feels like a music video, although to be fair I think some action movies would benefit from a little more of this fun

I came to say pretty much the same. This is a genuinely lovely, artfully edited video, and I plan to rewatch it, but there's many terms that are off that lessen the piece as a whole. The odometer is the element on your dash that shows how many miles a car has on it, the tachometer shows how fast the engine is turning, and the speedometer shows the vehicle speed. A J-turn or "reverse 180" is done in reverse, and is not the technique shown in the alleyway slide. This is essentially a reverse Rockford. Diagetic sound isn't a technique, only diagetic editing is. The other is just a descriptor. The RV/brake check/etc mistakes are all further examples of small issues that just detract from the overall beauty of this video. Still liked it, still subscribed, only commented because it pulled me out of the video, and became distracting.

Great video covering it. I'd say directing, editing, color grading, stunt & costume wise... It's probably one of the best films of it's type. My only complaint with the film was the final act. The actions of almost all the characters involved seemed out of place. The waitress being on board with running away with a guy she barely knows & is now a wanted man. Kevin Spacey's character sacrificing himself for Baby, even though throughout the entire movie he basically wouldn't let him go. Also, the switch where Jon Hamm becomes the antagonist was something that just felt off. The directions every character took isn't what bothers me; it's just the film spent 2/3 of it's time setting up the characters one way... Only to do a 180 with everyone towards the end.

Kevin Spacey's sacrifice can be placed on him being a family man. Love is still an important thing to him, look at his nephew (albeit the nephew being quite a little crimeboss himself already). It's small things that do definitely set things in motion. Debora wanted to get away from everything. So running away with a wanted man isn't all that surprising if what you're trying to get is some sort of thrill. As for Jon Hamm's character, Eiza (the girlfriend) does foreshadow his change. Once he sees red, everything turns to black. Which is somethign that happens in both colour grading afterwards, and personality wise as well. He switched 180. Kevin Spacey's, as I already mentioned, being a family man, and one that saw a lot in Baby as well (he could've shot him when Baby stole his car, but didn't.) It's very small details, that take about 2 or maybe 3 rewatches to have it make sense of it all. And you can almost say that the very stunt in the beginning of the movie, foreshadows it all. During the highlight, it all switches on its axis, for it to become the movie it is in the end. (Which, by the way, can be seen in multiple ways as well)

Props for the driving and all, but due credit for this scene belongs to an old-school anime OVA called "Riding Bean" - the story opens with the infamous Bean Bandit (in his red car) choreographing his pickup of some bank robbers, then proceeding to humiliate the Chicago PD through his impressive driving. Might be worth watching Riding Bean and seeing how similar the rest of the stories are.

Talking about Diagetic Sound reminds me of what they did with Spec Ops : The Line for ps3/Xbox 360. Killer video my dude.

This movie is so beautiful and I will never forget how awestruck I was at the end of the first scene or the smile I had when it ended. There are few movies I have watched that have made me genuinely glad I watched them or feel like I wish it didn’t end and this is one of those movies, I heard Edgar Wright finished the script for the sequel but if it really goes into production I would be cautious about it just because it can either be better (which for me is hard to imagine) or it could be worse. I digress, I love this movie

Your commentary is really quite good, and I love your insight into the direction of this movie. That said, I think one little technical error brought me out of the video. I'm fairly certain you meant "speedometer," rather then "odometer." This is from one writer to another because I know you'll take it as it was meant. It has been wonderful to find your channel, and I look forward to seeing what you bring us next.

That opening chase was a pure masterpiece of stunt work. Edgar Wright should do an MCU movie, maybe this time it'll happen.

The idea of Edgar Wright's Ant-Man will haunt me right alongside the ghost of what would have been Cary Fukunaga's IT.

@@christopherteregis9151 indeed, Ant-Man would have been in a whole other level with clever stunts and jokes that didn't rely so heavily on Paul. Fukunaga's IT would have been a bit more dark humour for sure, even if just handling the sequel that dragged so damn long and delivered a bland ending.

Unfortunatelly some of those trucks were CGI, it would have been the ultimate flex otherwise.

I think one of the stunt people was on corridor and said that in the alley, the trailer is CGI but the truck isn't or something like that
