The 2020 season is easily the worst season Ferrari has ever had. Even their young supertalent LeClerc sounds kind of resigned with the lack of performance of the Ferrari. The causes for the bad performance are clear: severe loss of engine-power after the two cheating scandals (I joke to my son that Ferrari seems to have mounted the same engine as his Alfa MiTO 0.9 TwinAir Turbo ánd about the aerodynamic of a bus. In my opinion it's also clear who's responsible for this debacle: Mattia Binotto. Binotto has clearly shown that his coup against Mauricio Arrivabene was a powergrab that was way above his capabilities. He may be a decent Technical Director (although he deliberately sabotaged Ferrari's upgrade during Arrivabene's last season), he's definitely NOT a decent Team Manager. And I score him only as a decent Technical Director because both scandals ánd the horrible aero and chassis developement happened on his watch. The solution to this crisis at Ferrari is therefore also clear: fire Binotto, because demoting him to Just technical Director would probably have him sabotaging development again just out of spite, and hire a new Technical Director and a new Team Manager. Preferably one of the two would be a non-Italian, because it's been proven time and again that an all-Italian Ferrari is a disaster because of continuous infighting.
@CYMotorsport

"deliberately sabotaged Ferrari's upgrade" is this a known legitimate fact? that's a serious accusation
@tjroelsma
4 жыл бұрын
@@GloomGaiGar Here's the facts: 1. Ferrari started off the season reasonably well 2. After the first Aero upgrade the car became somewhat more difficult to setup and the balance was harder to find 3. The second upgrade actually made it worse, while the Technical Director, one Mattia Binotto, claimed it performed better in wind-tunnel testing, yet the team couldn't get the setup right 4. After struggling again during a free practice, Arrivabene decided to do a reset and go back to the Areo package they had at the begining of the season to try and find out what or where they went wrong 5. The next free practice both Ferrari's were much faster, more stable and both drivers were way more happy with the cars than before. 6. Binotto was at the same time openly campaigning to get Arrivabene fired for his inability to get the maximum performance out of the cars, so he, Binotto, could become Team Manager. To me that paints a pretty clear picture.

I think you overlooked one aspect in your analysis, or perhaps I missed it. The older points system in F1, due to awarding points to a far smaller part of the grid, had a tendency to enlarge the difference in points tally between the top teams and the midfield. So you can't really make a straightforward comparison based on the number of points scored between periods in which they used a different points system. A better approach would be to apply the same modern points system retroactively.
@emdotrod

This season's Ferrari isn't that bad to be honest, at least in the beginning. Leclerc really outpaced the car and having 2 podium finishes on a car that on a regular basis can only fight for the bottom half of the top 10 cannot be classified as "one of the worst seasons". Compared to what they did last season this might be a huge downgrade but it's not the worst in my opinion

Well, sometimes that is not enough. For a while it looked as if Alboreto would be 1985 champion with the Ferrari but by the end of the year Prost overtook him in points and was champion. In 1990 Ferrari had a really good chassis and a powerful V12 to rival the McLaren-Honda. So it was believed that they'd finally win in 1991. The opposite happened. Then we had Alonso in 2010. Close but no cigar. Vettel in 2017 and 2018. Looked set to be champion both those years but just failed on the final stretch. Will Ferrari be back in the future? Highly likely. But will they be a top team and win titles? Well, that's a whole other game now isn't it? Bear in mind that when Schumacher won his first title for them back in 2000 they hadn't won a drivers' title since 1979 meaning that they went through the entire 80's and 90's with no champion. Not for the lack of good drivers, funds, facilities or equipment. They simply never operated like an efficient team until the Schumacher/Todt/Brawn/Byrne days.

With a team like Ferrari, you can expect them to bounce back once the 2022 regulations arrive. They need to do something big on the engine side though, and 2022 is a good time to do that. But if they aren't able to do something big, it could get worse for Ferrari. With dirty air almost removed, their engine woes could get highlighted even more. It seems like they are getting a big help from the dirty air effect as they are falling back in the races a lot, and they could fall back more and a lot faster with dirty air being not as bad. 2021 is going to be pretty much the same, but if they can nail the 2022 regulations and fix their engine issues, it might only be a couple years until we see Ferrari back at the front of the grid.

While I respect your knack for theatrics - a duck is a duck. There's no two ways about it - Ferrari were found guilty and privately agreed to a settlement that would protect the interest of both parties. This being f1, they probably agreed not to veto the 2022 regs, plus assisting with any/all future power unit investigations. Secondly, challenge accepted. The 2014 mercedes Pu with it's innovative split turbine gave the team a massive power advantage and they were never called cheats. Only one team has since copied said innovation - honda. Thirdly, what do you mean "The ceiling to innovate is all but gone." Please tell me this was merely a throwaway comment. The sf70H, remains the most technically adventurous car in 2017. From it's sidepod design, flexy floor, and awesome tire wear characteristics. It probably lacked the grunt of the w08, but had a sublime chassis with an expansive operating window. Furthermore, ferrari was on top form politically. Cleverly seeking clarification on mercedes hydraulic suspension which no doubt hobbled the brackley outfit with the misbehaving "Diva". F1 is a engineering sport. Innovation is the reason constructors exists. Mercedes is innovation. In time of "stagnant" rules, they developed the DAS. Which as we now know, merely warms the front tires. At the same time they copied ferrari's POU and made it work. Their rear lower wishbone suspension is a work of art and has given them a significant aerodynamic boost. So tell me, where exactly is this ceiling you speak of? Doesn't seem to exist for the people at brackley and brixworth. Here's the thing, ferrari has never lacked intelligent engineers or creative minds. What they've always lacked is clear leadership and a structure that doesn't crumble at the behest of the Italian media. Every time they needlessly fire a TD or an engine guy, he ends up at their rivals (costa, Allison, Sassi) - along with their secrets. Even if they manage to get it together, they no longer have a blank cheque to recover. The cost cap might see them languish in the midfield for some years. It's not the 90's where they enjoyed 2 or 3x the budget of the competitors. I'm certain you've read mercedes 2019 budget statement. For all their spending, they actually made a profit. Let that sink in. In the immortal words of a certain young dutchman; "That's what you get when you cheat!"

Very good... I do wonder how Ferrari will do in the future, assuming being the beneficiary of "institutionalized cheating" becomes a thing of the past. ie Having the benefit of unfair advantages baked in to F1 is hopefully going to be removed going forward. I am aware it's a gross oversimplification but I've never cheered on Ferrari because of the unfair advantages the team has always enjoyed. An advantage that has been only just bearable because they have lacked the competence to dominate courtesy of such unfairness. If the team can do well on an even playing-field (not holding my breath on that one) then I will be happy to cheer them on. I wonder though, without unfair advantages, if the team is destined to become a perennial back-marker. What then? -More unfair help because for some unfathomable reason Ferrari is seen as "special"? -Let the team fall out of F1 as others have in the past? ...Although this time as a result of a fundamental inability to compete without help rather than being on the wrong end of a grossly unfair F1. I have always subscribed to the view that while F1 has always been a powerhouse for innovation the huge mistake that has been endemic in the sport has been the need to feel relevant. We are talking about people peddling extremely expensive toy cars round racing circuits for entertainment. The result has been one set of regulations after another aimed at prescriptive restriction of innovation in a futile attempt to curb costs. Not only leading to stagnation but also spiraling costs as money is plowed in to iterative changes to minutiae the add nothing to the spectacle... only to see the artificially disadvantaged teams loose out and go bust, being unable to play that game. I remember when there were so many teams in F1 there had to be a pre-qualifying just to make qualifying possible. It really wouldn't be hard to formulate regulations that free up the ability of teams to innovate while allowing smaller teams a viable business model. It only takes the will to do so... ...I guess this post my be my swan-song as after following F1 for more than 30 years I'm done. The final nail in the coffin being the inappropriate addition of poisonous political agenda in to what should be innocent entertainment: -I resent being told what a bad person I am by persons who neither know me nor live a life sufficiently relevant to the topic to possibly have anything to say on the subject. If you are going to preach a message at people on the unreasonable assumption your audience are in your view "bad" people while making it obvious you have nothing on which to base that assumption it is no wonder people get upset. -I resent the person's preaching their doctrine having so little faith in what they say that all they can do is ego-egocentrically tell others how to behave rather than taking practicable and personal steps to make a difference themselves. If you think you see a fire how about trying to put it out instead of telling other people how bad they are for not doing it for you! -I resent having my innocent entertainment hijacked by anyone for use as a platform for any "message" that has no relevance to that platform. Indeed I resent finding myself hoping certain persons do badly because of their poisonous behavior rather than cheering them on for their skill - all the enjoyment has been sucked from races as a result making watching them pointless. -Most of all I resent the idiotically conceived, selfish, self-serving, divisive, hypocritical and bigoted, message of destruction dressed in a cloak of false virtue that is poisoning our society delivered by such people. A misguided intention to "do good" is no excuse, if you are one of those who adhere to such poison just look at the results and ask yourself if you are indeed doing any good.

I reeeaally don't want to be that guy but, why Ronaldo instead of Messi?
@CYMotorsport
4 жыл бұрын
Haha well imagine if it was Messi how many would say the reverse. You can probably guess how many times I’ve been asked this haha im going to give you the first and likely only real response bc I cant sleep anyway I analyze football as I do F1. It’s a lot more dynamic but distilling it down a couple sentences, Messi is obviously a better playmaker. Atleast imo. But my bias towards the two player leans on the better scorer. Pure scorer, that is. Neither are pure 10 spots. And for the best player in the world, I’d never not chose a 10. I like Messi more as an 11 or pure winger. Messi’s career is helped by his natural tendency as the best playmaker in the history of the sport, or one on. He’s had a better supporting cast to play with . Which isn’t luck or anything, I’m not white washing it, he’s put himself there. But it’s just a matter of play style. I also am one of those old schooled football fans who values international resumes. Ronaldo has led his team to atleast the Euro title. Messi has failed at every single major event. And no I’m not counting the superclassic haha. Another bias I have against Messi, & I’m just being forthright here, is it has always bothered me to the core his big match performance. The losses aren’t his fault, but it’s impossible to ignore. And in 2016, he directly made the loss a bit easier with another big penalty miss. In the finals he’s reached, he didn’t score or even tally an assist. Specifically his away record in the CL is the other alarming bit. You’d be fair to ask for examples - here’s a few off cuff in good faith so I’m not just shit posting haha: 1. 2010 quarter bounce: not sure why he even showed up. He and I shared the same goal Mark. 2. In F1 I have no favorites and don’t lean to any driver or constructor but football I lean Chelsea. And in 2012 I’m glad we drew Barca on the way to pens in Munich. I think Messi played. Wouldn’t know the difference. 3. 2013 Bayern. I mean. I won’t say more 4. I don’t think he scored in 2014 in their 2 leg bounce from atletico. This would also happen again in a few years at the hands of atletico. 5. 2016 internationally was pretty poor too for him. I’m not saying saying he’s not the most dynamic player in any midfield. Bc imo, he’s a top for me. But all around player, goal scorer, captain, and big pitch attendee, the edge goes slightly to cristiano IMO. I could pull similar stories of missed chances for Ronaldo but somehow each stat line is less painful bc in big moments he has done more than can could be asked with Examples of him outperforming his benchmarks. Messi has a habit of underperforming his own benchmarks at the most critical times. This is what you get for asking a stat nerd but also just a football lover to answer the worlds worst question haha. And again idk who is reading this really probably no one but these are just my opinions off the data I’ve pulled over the years watching . I’m open to the alternative perspective if it gets us closer to the truth

For worst Ferrari seasons I immediately thought of 1980 and 1992,1980 in particular. I don't think there's been a sharper decline in results for a reigning champion team and driver in a season. As for 2020, I think it's fair to say that this has been their worst season probably since 1993, even a season like 2014, which saw 3 team principals, the departure of Luca di Montezemolo and a pretty disillusioned Fernando Alonso, was better than the current campaign in terms of results and general competitiveness, albeit more with Alonso than Räikkönen. I wonder what this sort of thing would look like for a team like McLaren. Certainly 2015-2018 would surely be up there in terms of their worst seasons, and I guess maybe 1978, 1980 and 1995 might be others (although '95 did yield P4 in the Constructors Championship).

There are too many poor Ferrari seasons to choose from! In the 80’s they had a good car in 1982 and should have won both titles if both their drivers hadn’t exited the stage in an ambulance...1985 I think it was Alboreto had an outside chance of the title, but 1986-88 were pretty dire... The started to get better across 1989-90 when Barnard and Prost were there, but both 1991 and 1992 were disasters. 1993 started off just as bad, but all the active teams shut off development mid season, Honda came in and helped with their engines and Barnard came back, so the second half of the season was better... 1994 was in my opinion the sexiest Ferrari ever and they were much better that year and in 1995... Then from 1996 to 2008 they had some, or all of the dream team of Todt, Schumacher, Brawn, Byrne and Costa and that was obviously their best ever period... 2009 was an outright disaster, then 2010-2013 they were good, but not good enough to dethrone Red Bull, even with Alonso driving. 2014 they were a bit meh, but then for the rest of the turbo hybrid era they have been Mercedes’ main challenger, although largely second best, apart from 2018-19 when Hamilton alone was the reason they didn’t win the driver’s title as they had the best car (well engine) for most of that period. 2020 is entirely a result of cheating and being caught doing it. If you are going to cheat, at least be subtle doing it. Don’t suddenly gain 50bhp overnight and be like a dragster on all the straights...

I would say that as a Ferrari fan some criticism and even resentment of Ferrari is justified. The team does have a history of riding the line of the rulebook, getting into controversies, infighting and the treatment of its drivers. Couple that with many still remembering the early 2000s and u will see many ppl wanting them to fall hard. Unfortunately it causes some to overlook Ferrari’s legacy and ability to inspire so many people not just in Italy but worldwide.

Honestly, it has to be their worst car of the last 30 years. Even in bad years like the early 90s or some of the early 2010s cars, they made incremental improvements throughout the year. This car has gotten actively worse as the season has unfolded, and the only reason it has performed in the points at all is because Charles Leclerc is one of the best drivers in the world.

@@CYMotorsport At this point, their best chance for another podium is Imola if they can get lucky with the start and run an effective strategy. They need tracks where passing is extremely difficult, even if there are fast sections. The worst is Anglic F1 fans saying Ferrari is bad cause they are dishonest or cheaters. Ironically, Brits are enjoying great success in the sport in the last 5 years, with 8 out of 10 teams being based in UK, so I cant stop thinking that F1 has just become pretty much a Brit affair, a petty reason of pride. It wouldnt be a far fetch putting out the hypothesis that FIA is pulling the string to make Ferrari and Renault look bad. The way they dealt with Ferrari engine is all but fair and impartial. Now red bull might have got Ferrari out of the way in such lousy manner, but still they cant compete nearly as good as ferrari did as wdc and wcc runner up contenders. Cant wait to see a Chinese F1 team join the sport and kick it, so we can stop this tea stinking party.
