I actually learned to solve it in 3 days time with the help of two schoolmates and can now solve it in 1min30s. I haven't gotten around to committing to it in more than 10 years and I'm 20. It's pretty simple once you understand the logic behind how to get pieces in to a certain place and with a few simple algorithms, you'll solve it in less than 3min after a few days of practice. Then you begin to learn OLLs and PLLs to maybe get that time under a 1min.

With some minor changes you can get decent solves with the beginner method. Do F2L since its honestly not much harder than the split corners/edges method shown in the video, learn the reverse algorithm for permutating last layer corners if its a bad case, and then learn to permute the corners without flipping the cube, and you can get sub 1minute solve with this method. I'm still learning OLL and PLL for CFOP, so I'm using this modified beginner method to practice getting better at cross and F2L. My best solve so far was 50s (last layer skip), but I average closer to 1m30s.

When you have an L on the top layer with one edge facing front and another facing right, you can just turn the front and middle layer together for the first move in the algorithm and it will skip the straight line and go right to the cross
