The problem is people take offense when truth is spoken. You can see some of the comments are so defensive, instead of acknowledging the reality. No one is forced to drink or to not drink. Every person has a right to choose what to do with their own lives. But the dangers of anything, be it alcohol or excess sugar should be communicated to people so they can make informed decisions. This is well presented. Well done to DW as always.

It’s not as big a problem as in the USA. Cocaine is a worse problem, with gangs trafficking it through Netherlands and Belgium to the rest of Europe. It doesn’t make the alcohol problems less important, though, as they do cause serious societal problems. But as they pointed out in this documentary, it is often from frustration that they have no work or purpose in life, that they end up drinking. Governments need to resolve these issues so that there are enough jobs and money for everyone to live comfortably, and plenty of mental health support, then they’ll have less problems with alcohol or drugs.

Hard to say what's worse. There are more drinkers in Europe, average consumption per drinker is higher in Africa. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is certainly worse in Africa. And in general they have a tougher time dealing with the economic and health consequences from alcohol. Also the African alcohol industry is less regulated, adding to both the addiction and the health issues.

@@LindokuhleSinxadi Well so the children can help with labor. Is that what you mean?
@LindokuhleSinxadi
18 күн бұрын
@@Flugs0 no, people who are in poverty or living in low income households tend to have a lot of children. Hence why a lot of African women have a lot of kids compared to women Europe. If a person is living in bad living conditions, they don’t have the same access and knowledge about health practices than a person in liveable conditions. I used to ask myself why are people having unprotected sex, if they don’t want HIV. But the truth is people still do it anyway. People who can afford, they buy mornings after pills and they could easily do an abortion. condoms are free in South Africa, but you can only get them in clinics, or other places. So imagine a poor person might need to go to the clinic every time they want condoms but a wealthy person just buys them at groceries stores or petrol stations. It’s about inequality of resources

It’s very classist to put everyone in one box, without looking at their circumstances. This is why women in Africa need to be more educated, so that they can make better choices. Because education kinda eliminates poverty.

you forgot to mention that almost half of africa is under 18 years old. (0.65 billion out of 1.37 billion) the percent of adults who are drinking would have been interesting to know. not factoring in the age of the population may be why they keep talking like its very small group of drinkers, but it has a big impact on the economy. 1:54 29% of the population in africa could be about half of the adults. thats why its showing up as a small percentage of the population, but has such a negative impact.

I am in South Africa and alcohol abuse ( within the drinking population) is rampant here, noting that she mentioned it's a small population percentage of drinkers compared to non drinkers ( a fact you conveniently ignored in the first part of the video) and that Europeans drink more. This is a story about alcohol affecting that section of the population which drinks, not the whole of Africa, not Europe this is very clear if you actually paid attention!

The alcohol industry plays the exact same tricks they have played in Europe decades ago. I think there is value in looking at what Europe did (and not yet did) to combat the alcohol industry, or else African nations get duped by the breweries and destilleries just like the European nations in the past. There is a big problem with alcohol amongst the coloured people of the western cape. A large % are susceptible to alcoholism due to their genetic ancestry. What makes it worse is that the wine industry in the region pay part of the wages in wine! I'm sure the industry would like to stop that practice, but there would be a riot. Compounding the issue is that sub standard wine is sold off in plastic bottles - 500ml is sold for about 50c US.
